'''Overpaying''' is a mechanic in the [[Guilds]] expansion. Some cards allow the player to spend more [[coin]]s than their [[cost]] when buying them, for additional effects. Such cards have a "+" added to their cost symbol.  Cards having an overpay effect are:

* {{Card|Stonemason}}, which allows you to gain 2 Actions each costing the amount you overpaid.
* {{Card|Doctor}}, which allows you for each {{Cost|1}} you overpaid to look at the top card of your deck; and you can choose to trash it, discard it, or put it back.
* {{card|Infirmary}}, which allows you to draw and optionally trash from your hand a number of cards equal to the amount you overpaid.
* {{Card|Masterpiece}}, which allows you to gain a silver for each {{Cost|1}} you overpaid.
* {{Card|Herald}}, which allows you for each {{Cost|1}} you overpaid to look through your discard pile and put a card from it on top of your deck.

* Reducing the costs of cards via cards like {{Card|Renown}} does not make overpaying cheaper; for example if you had {{Cost|5}} and two Renowns in play and bought {{Card|Farrier}}, Farrier would cost {{Cost|0}}, and overpaying with your {{Cost|5}} would still only give you +5&nbsp;Cards at end of turn.

Overpay was a natural extension of the when-gain cards in Hinterlands, and was a good match for the tokens, since you could save up tokens for a big overpay. In general Dominion leans towards putting stuff on the cards, not in the rulebook. For all games I like putting stuff on the cards, but sometimes something is very common and easy to remember and it will save a lot of space to put it in the rulebook. Or it may feel like it's really the game and not the card. There are also corner cases that don't really come up; those don't like to be explained on cards. And some stuff just has no hope of fitting on the cards.

Overpay is now very rulebook-y - with no rulebook yet - but that's a result of needing to work with what was there (I don't know what it would look like if I were making the set from scratch today; I haven't put in that work).
