This is a Treasure worth {{coin|1}}. You play it in your Buy phase, like other Treasures. When you play it, you also get +1 Buy, and you may play an additional Treasure card from your hand twice. If you choose to do that, you trash that Treasure. You still get any coins that Treasure gave you from playing it, despite trashing it. If you use Counterfeit to play Spoils twice, you will get +{{coin|6}}, (in addition to the {{coin|1}}, from Counterfeit) and return Spoils to the Spoils pile; you will be unable to trash it. If you use Counterfeit to play a Treasure that does something special when you play it, you will do that thing twice. Cards with two types, one of which is Treasure (such as Harem from Intrigue) are Treasures and so can be played via Counterfeit.

  • If you choose to do that, you trash that Treasure.
  • You still get any coins that Treasure gave you from playing it, despite trashing it.
  • If you use Counterfeit to play SpoilsSpoils.jpg twice, you will get +$6 (in addition to the $1 from Counterfeit) and return Spoils to the Spoils pile; you will be unable to trash it.
  • If you use Counterfeit to play a Treasure that does something special when you play it (such as another Counterfeit), you will do that thing twice.

Other rules clarifications

  • If you use Counterfeit to play and trash a Treasure that has an effect while it is in play, you will not get to use that effect once the card is trashed. For example, using Counterfeit on QuarryQuarry.jpg will not leave you with reduced prices for Action cards.

Strategy Article

There's no strategy article for Counterfeit, and there's little forum consensus on how to use it.

An obvious way is as a nonterminal MoneylenderMoneylender.jpg. If you play Counterfeit and trash a CopperCopper.jpg with it, you get at total of +$3, as well as +1 Buy. Pretty good. Being nonterminal is why it costs $5 and not $4. As the game goes on, you may use Counterfeit to trash SilversSilver.jpg (for $5 total) or even GoldsGold.jpg (for a whopping $7)—Moneylender can't do those things! In those cases, it's like a better SalvagerSalvager.jpg. Depending on the Kingdom, it could find uses in both engine-like and Big Money–like strategies.

Its major downside is its cost, since at $5 it'll rarely be an opening, and it will face stiff competition from other $5-cost cards.

Of special note is its interaction with SpoilsSpoils.jpg. Since Spoils returns to the Spoils pile after being played, there is no downside to Counterfeiting it on its way out!
