Revision as of 04:30, 2 July 2022

There are currently fourteen DominionDominion.jpg (October 2008) expansions; each introduces a particular gameplay concept or mechanism to the game, or focuses on a different aspect of gameplay:

  • IntrigueIntrigue.jpg, (July 2009) an expansion of 25 Kingdom cards, introduces Victory cards that share other types and focuses on cards that allow a player to choose between multiple effects. The first edition of Intrigue was also a standalone, coming with its own set of Basic cards.
However, Intrigue (Second Edition)Intrigue2.jpg (Fall 2016) is not a standalone, and as such does not include Basic cards. Now a regular-sized set, it has 26 Kingdom cards with seven new cards (six were dropped), and some other mild changes.
  • SeasideSeaside.jpg, (October 2009) a regular-sized expansion of 26 Kingdom cards, debuts Duration cards and in general focuses on cards that can have effects on turns other than when they're played.
Seaside (Second Edition)Seaside2.jpg (June 2022) has 27 Kingdom cards, of which nine are new and raise the percentage of Duration cards the set has. Notably, a few strong cards left with improved cards taking their place.

  • AlchemyAlchemy.jpg, (May 2010) a small expansion of 12 Kingdom cards, contains PotionsPotion.jpg—a new resource that most of the cards in this set require to buy them—and focuses on Action cards.
  • ProsperityProsperity.jpg, (October 2010) a regular-sized expansion of 25 Kingdom cards, introduces PlatinumPlatinum.jpg and ColonyColony.jpg, $7-costing cards, and VP tokens (+VP), and focuses on Treasure cards and powerful or expensive cards.
Prosperity (Second Edition)Prosperity2.jpg (June 2022) has 25 Kingdom cards, of which three have received tweaked wordings, and nine are new Action and Treasure cards seeking to replace weak/dominant ones.

  • CornucopiaCornucopia.jpg, (June 2011) a small expansion of 13 Kingdom cards, focuses on cards that reward or increase diversity in players' hands and decks.
  • HinterlandsHinterlands.jpg, (October 2011) a regular-sized expansion of 26 Kingdom cards, focuses on cards with when-gain and when-buy effects.
Hinterlands (Second Edition)Hinterlands2.jpg (July 2022) replaces nine cards, generally with unrelated ones that support the expansion's when-gain and filtering themes. With double the amount of Reaction cards, a new subtheme was created.

  • Dark AgesDark Ages.jpg, (August 2012) an extra-large expansion of 35 Kingdom cards, introduces Ruins, Shelters, and various other unusual configurations of cards, and focuses on trashing and upgrading.
  • GuildsGuilds.jpg, (June 2013) a small expansion of 13 Kingdom cards, introduces Coffers ($ a player can save) and overpaying.

  • AdventuresAdventures.jpg, (April 2015) a large expansion of 30 Kingdom cards, reintroduces Duration cards, and introduces Reserve cards as well as Events, which are on-buy effects that aren't cards. It also provides cardboard tokens that can modify cards, or track card or Event effects.
  • EmpiresEmpires.jpg, (June 2016) a regular-sized expansion of 24 Kingdom cards, introduces the Debt D mechanic and reintroduces VP tokens (+VP). It adds more Events and has a big focus on player interaction offering split piles, Gathering cards and to some extent Landmarks.

  • NocturneNocturne.jpg, (November 2017) an extra-large expansion of 33 Kingdom cards, introduces Night cards, Heirlooms, and Boons and Hexes, and also focuses on gaining and using cards from outside the Supply.
  • RenaissanceRenaissance.jpg, (November 2018) a regular-sized expansion of 25 Kingdom cards, revisits Coffers and introduces Villagers, Projects, and Artifacts.

  • MenagerieMenagerie (expansion).jpg, (March 2020) a large expansion of 30 Kingdom cards, introduces Exile, Horses, and Ways, and revisits Events. Themes are additional Reaction cards and alternative card costs.
  • AlliesAllies.jpg, (March 2022) a large expansion of 31 Kingdom cards, introduces Favors and revisits (rotating) split piles. Themes are choices between different effects and recursion.

There are also several promotional cards that are typically made for gaming conventions, a set of Base CardsBase Cards.jpg for adding players or replacing worn cards, and a number of combinedBig Box II.jpg and "special edition" sets built from pre-existing expansions. Notably, CornucopiaCornucopia.jpg and GuildsGuilds.jpg have been re-released in a combined and, in later years, revised edition (Guilds & CornucopiaGuilds & Cornucopia.jpg) to include additional materials (Coffers matsCoffers.jpg, Bane markerBane.jpg).

Trivia

Future 2022

There is a new expansion coming, of all new stuff, unrelated to the 2E's; we currently are trying to have it out in October, but in this day and age it's really hard to get what you want there.

Different total numbers of cards

Jay would just repeat to me (if I asked), that I should make the expansion as good as it can be and then he'll deal with what cost or whatever that means. But I do nevertheless take into account the tokens/mats; they're an extra cost, and it's nice if the expansions are the same price.

There's no special time I decide the size. I work on the set and gradually have more cards and more of an idea of what tokens/mats/landscapes/non-supply cards are in it. At some point I feel like, this wants to be this many cards. These days the size tends to be as large as it can be while including the other components.
