There are relatively few situations where Farming Village is worse than a vanilla Village, and most are slightly unusual scenarios that are unlikely to occur regularly in a game: a hand that contains {{Card|Baron}} without an estate, a hand where you want to trash or remodel an Estate but don't have one in the hand, or drawing {{Card|Tournament}} or {{Card|Explorer}} without a {{Card|Province}}.  And in these cases, Farming Village doesn't really harm you relative to not being in your deck, it just makes it impossible to fix your bad draw when you draw another card.

Farming Village is an Action card from Cornucopia. It is a village (i.e., it gives +2 Actions) that digs for an Action or Treasure, instead of merely drawing the top card of the deck like the vanilla VillageVillage.jpg does. In addition to its use as a source of +Actions for engines, it can also counter certain Attacks that leave dead cards on top of the deck, such as RabbleRabble.jpg.

Strategy Article

There's no strategy article for Farming Village. It was mentioned in Comparing the Villages by chwhite, edited by theory.

The Comparing the Villages article classifies Farming Village as the best among the 3rd-tier villages. It functions like a vanilla VillageVillage.jpg but is almost always a little better, since it’s guaranteed to draw a useful card. It is an incredible (and incredibly obvious) counter to RabbleRabble.jpg, Fortune TellerFortune Teller.jpg, and sometimes BureaucratBureaucrat.jpg, and also helps to a degree against Ghost ShipGhost Ship.jpg. It is definitely one of the better combo-enablers, especially when paired with weaker +Card effects.

Even in the better scenarios, Farming Village's bonus is only a very modest boost, but a $4 Village is often a reasonable buy.

When is Farming Village best?

The differences between scenarios in which Farming Village is better and worse are very subtle. The only decks that have enough dead cards for Farming Village to be a huge benefit are usually either GardensGardens.jpg/Silk RoadSilk Road.jpg rush games, where Villages are typically not useful or necessary, or heavy cursing games where Engines that require Villages are also not terribly effective.

In most games, Farming Village will give a small benefit at the beginning of the game, by skipping EstatesEstate.jpg, and a small benefit late in the game when skipping over accumulated green cards. It tends to be least useful in the mid-game, especially in games where the Estates have been trashed.

Farming Village is best in situations where your deck has a lot of victory cards or CursesCurse.jpg to sift through, but when you have gotten rid of Coppers, as the card will still draw Coppers. Copper-trashers like MoneylenderMoneylender.jpg, LoanLoan.jpg, and Spice MerchantSpice Merchant.jpg are thus more valuable than normal in a deck with Farming Villages, and the presence of these cards also makes Farming Village more attractive. Farming Village is also more valuable in games where a lot of Curses are being handed out.

There are relatively few situations where Farming Village is worse than a vanilla Village, and most are slightly unusual scenarios that are unlikely to occur regularly in a game: a hand that contains BaronBaron.jpg without an estate, a hand where you want to trash or remodel an Estate but don't have one in the hand, or drawing TournamentTournament.jpg or ExplorerExplorer.jpg without a ProvinceProvince.jpg. And in these cases, Farming Village doesn't really harm you relative to not being in your deck, it just makes it impossible to fix your bad draw when you draw another card.

Farming Village makes a good engine with Courtyard because after playing your first Farming Village you can play a Courtyard, and then topdeck a victory card, which your next Farming Village will skip over.

Trivia

Secret History

I had previously tried a card that drew you an action or treasure but did nothing else (just +1 Action), for $2 in another set. It was fine but there was no room for it there in the end. I moved it here as a Village.

Retrospective

I guess my top thing is, it would be nice to have another card that really makes you want a variety of cards. Just to push the theme a little more. Probably Farming Village would go to have room for it. People like Farming Village but it's the off-theme card I need the least here.
