Feodum is a very different card than many other Alt-VP, and since Dark Ages is somewhat new, there isn't a strategy article for it. If you think you know how to play Feodum, let us know on the forum!
+
Original article by werothegreat

It may seem at first to be similar to cards like Gardens, Vineyard, or Silk Road, which also count the cards in your deck. Howevever, Feodum differs in an important aspect — the size of the Silver pile. Gaining more Silvers does not bring the game much closer to an end (at least in 2 player games), because it is rare for Silver to be one of the three depleted piles. Thus, Feodum is often better suited for long slogs instead of rushes, where you aim to get lots and lots of Silvers and make your Feodums worth as much as Provinces. With all those Silvers, you'll have enough cash to dip into Provinces yourself at times.
+
Feodum, like its counting Victory card brethren, is a rather niche card.  In a few instances, it can be worth a staggering amount of VP, vastly outweighing Province; however, it is also often ignorable, and can sometimes be worth nothing at all. There does exist a middle ground, though, where it can be treated like a pinata full of Silver, or where it can help add a few tie-breaking points in a sloggier game.

Feodum is great with Trader or Masterpiece which can gain a lot of Silvers quickly. Other Silver-gainers also work, but slower gainers aren't nearly as strong. Examples include Bureaucrat, Explorer, Hermit, and Squire. Since you can trash Feodum to gain Silvers, Feodum works somewhat better when you have a trash for benefit card. Combined with either Graverobber or Rogue, you can even get your Feodums back from the trash. Since Jack of all Trades both gains Silvers and trashes, it has exceptionally good synergy with Feodum.
+
If Feodum is on the board, quickly run through this mental checklist:
 +
* Is there a way to gain Silver very quickly?
 +
* Is there a way to gain Silver more slowly?
 +
* Is there a way to trash Feodum?
 +
Let’s look at each of these individually.

Feodum is a lot stronger in games with more than 2 players. The Silver pile drains a lot more quickly, Attacks prolong the game more, and having 12 Feodum in the Supply instead of 8 allows for more liberal trashing. It is surprisingly easy to get close to 18 Silvers, enough for Feodum to be worth 6 VP, in a long multiplayer game with good trashing or Silver gaining. Feodum is essentially worthless in Colony games.
+
Feeding the Feoda
 +
The time Feodum shines brighter than a supernova is when there is a powerful Silver gainer.  Masterpiece and Delve are the cream of the crop here, letting you buy multiple Silvers per turn. Also noteworthy is Raid, which has the added benefit of hurting your opponent, though it does require you to gain a few Silvers the hard way first. All of these are helped by any kind of strong draw: Masterpiece and Delve want as much Cost as possible to spend on a Buy, while Raid wants you to get as many Silvers into play as you can.

Feodum + Rats
+
If you find yourself in this optimal situation, your aim should be to empty out the Silver pile as quickly as possible, picking up Feoda along the way (assuming your opponent mirrors). In this specific combo instance, winning the Silver split is more important than getting more Feoda (though if you don’t get any, you’re screwed); if you get 27 Silvers and 3 Feoda (27VP total), that will beat an opponent with 13 Silvers and 5 Feoda (20VP total).  If your opponent goes for Provinces instead, emptying the Silver pile isn’t strictly necessary; you just need enough to make sure your Feoda give more points than their Provinces, so make sure you actually grab Feoda before the game ends!
Below is a description of Feodum + Rats. The strength of this combo is disputed. More specifically: this combo has A LOT of trouble with 3-piling, doesn't gain that much points, and ends up with a mediocre deck full of dead Rats.
+

Feodum can be combined with Rats for a Feodum rush. With other trashers you would need time to setup a trashing engine that can handle the large amounts of Silver and Feodum. Rats on the other hand multiply themselves along with the growth of your Silver collection, so you don't have to buy any additional ones. This should give you the freedom to buy Feodum nearly every turn while still frequently drawing a trasher+Feodum hand. For this strategy you should buy just one Rats in the first or second turn, and from then on make simple quick turns: whenever you draw a Rats and a Feodum together, trash the Feodum for 3 Silver and another Rats. Whenever you draw Rats without Feodum (which shouldn't happen very often after the first few turns) trash an Estate (if you have no other choice perhaps a Copper) so that a Rats takes its place in your deck. Whenever you draw Rats and only Silver, don't trash anything. Whenever you have at least 4, buy a new Feodum - the large amount of Silver in your deck will make this possible quite often. Whenever you have 3, buy a Silver. Early in the game you might have to choose between trashing a Copper + gaining a Rats + buying a Silver, or keeping the Copper + using it to buy a Feodum. (The correct choice will depend on your Rats/Feodum ratio at that time, but if you're not sure pick the Feodum to avoid getting too many Rats.) This strategy should automatically make your deck converge to a mix likely to give you ideal hands of 1 Rats, 1 Feodum, and 2 Silver. If Workshop or Bureaucrat is present it would be a good fifth card, since it would be the only terminal Action (not interfering with anything) and would provide a guaranteed Feodum/Silver whenever drawn. Once you have gained enough Silver (typically 15 in a game with 12 Feodums, from 4 Feodum trashes and 3 direct purchases) stop trashing and focus on emptying the Feodum pile. Next, make use of all the Silver in your deck to empty another pile of 3 or 4 or 5 cards that the other players have already bought from (or the Workshop pile). Perhaps the other players will panick and make a run for the Duchies, which you could help finish. If the game is not over by now, you could consider forcing it by playing Rats until that pile too is empty, but if you destroy more than 2 additional Feodums this will start bringing down your VP count. An end by Rats is thus most viable when another player is also playing Rats. If you can't end the rush while keeping the VP lead, it should be relatively safe to transition to buying Duchies and Provinces instead - you have a deck with thrice as many Silver as Rats that is pretty resistant to greening due to the sheer amount of Silver. Just don't play any more Rats!
+
In a Masterpiece game, ideally you want to finish with a three-pile ending: Silvers, Masterpieces, and Feoda.  However, if the Masterpieces don’t quite run out (or you’re using an Event gainer), your deck jammed full of Silver is perfect for buying Provinces, and can easily end the game conventionally.
 +

 +
If your opponent doesn’t try to mirror you, you’re looking at a maximum of 8 Feoda worth up to 13VP each – more than Colony!  In such a case, run down the Silver and Feodum piles as quick as you can while your opponent dawdles trying to get Provinces. Do not buy any Provinces yourself until you’ve secured enough VP to trounce them.
 +

 +
The Middle Ground
 +
Unfortunately, most Silver gainers are not as dramatic as those mentioned above.  However, that doesn’t mean Feodum is down for the count!  In a game with Bureaucrat or Squire, while emptying the Silver pile entirely is unrealistic, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect to have 10 or more Silvers by the end of the game.  In such cases, Feodum becomes a cheaper Duchy, and another option for three-piling. While it’s no longer the star of the show, it can still be a nice supplement to your main VP from Provinces.
 +

 +
If you’re aiming to use Feodum in this way, try to get your Silver gainer early. Not only do the Silvers help your Feoda, they also, as previously discussed, make buying Provinces easier.
 +

 +
Some Silver gainers can also trash.  Jack of All Trades, Hermit, and Amulet can also fill this middle ground role, but don’t mind if you get a Feodum early, just to trash for the Silvers inside. Jack and Hermit are better for this, as they can trash and gain Silver at the same time. In such cases, if you’re uncontested, the Feodum pile is unlikely to empty, so you’re not really losing any VP, as you can always just pick up another one, now worth 1VP more!
 +

 +
A word of warning, though: in a lot of these cases, there’s usually something better to do on the board than just slowly trickle Silvers into your deck, so keep an eye out for faster or more productive strategies.
 +

 +
Silver Slogs
 +
In junking games, particularly with Cultist, the game can be extended significantly as players wade through Ruins or Curse.  In such cases, you might end up buying 12 or more Silvers throughout the course of the game, making Feodum particularly attractive as the game drags on. In these cases, try to keep track of how many Silvers you think you’ll have by the end of the game; if it’s at least 9, start buying Feodum over Duchy, and keeping adding more Silver as you can.
 +

 +
Popping the Piñata
 +
But what about trashers that don’t gain Silver?  Mass trashers like Chapel and Donate see Feodum as an early game boost; in this case, you don’t really care about the VP, but the 3 Silvers are very nice. Working with only a single card trasher is a little risky, as it’s harder to line them up, but with remodelers like Upgrade or Remake, or trash for benefit cards like Salvager or Bishop, it can be worth it, especially since a popped Feodum provides three more pieces of fodder for later use. Upgrade can actually get a significant amount of VP from Feoda, as it can convert Estates into Silvers, Silvers into Feoda, and Feoda into more Upgrades.
 +

 +
Trader is an interesting example: it can generate a lot of Silvers for Feodum, but requires fodder to do so.  Popping open a Feodum gives you 7 Silvers, while Tradering a Silver gives it back to you with two more. It’s not quite as reliable as Masterpiece or Delve, and you need to make sure you don’t trash too many Feoda, but it can be very potent, though you may still want to supplement with Provinces.
 +

 +
If you have a single card trasher that doesn’t scale, like Forager or Trade Route, it’s probably not worth the trouble.  An exception would be Ratcatcher, as it’s cheap, and a lot easier to line up with a target.
 +

 +
Being able to trash a Feodum on gain can also be quite nice – Watchtower and Salt the Earth are prime examples, essentially letting you pay 4 for 3 Silvers, and a little bonus.
 +

 +
Miscellaneous
 +
Feodum provides a decent defense against trashing attacks, particularly Knights.  If it gets hit, you still get 3 Silvers, which then in turn are preferred targets of the Attack, keeping your more valuable cards safe.
 +

 +
At first thought, it might seem like Treasure Hunter would be a good Feodum rush enabler, but it can be pretty easy for your opponent to play around letting you gain lots of Silvers with it, and Feodum and Silver are both prime targets for Warrior.

Feodum, like its counting Victory card brethren, is a rather niche card. In a few instances, it can be worth a staggering amount of VP, vastly outweighing ProvincesProvince.jpg; however, it is also often ignorable, and can sometimes be worth nothing at all. There does exist a middle ground, though, where it can be treated like a pinata full of Silver, or where it can help add a few tie-breaking points in a sloggier game.

If Feodum is on the board, quickly run through this mental checklist:

 • Is there a way to gain Silver very quickly?
 • Is there a way to gain Silver more slowly?
 • Is there a way to trash Feodum?

Let’s look at each of these individually.

Feeding the Feoda

The time Feodum shines brighter than a supernova is when there is a powerful Silver gainer. MasterpieceMasterpiece.jpg and DelveDelve.jpg are the cream of the crop here, letting you buy multiple Silvers per turn. Also noteworthy is RaidRaid.jpg, which has the added benefit of hurting your opponent, though it does require you to gain a few Silvers the hard way first. All of these are helped by any kind of strong draw: Masterpiece and Delve want as much $ as possible to spend on a Buy, while Raid wants you to get as many Silvers into play as you can.

If your opponent doesn’t try to mirror you, you’re looking at a maximum of 8 Feoda worth up to 13VP each – more than ColonyColony.jpg! In such a case, run down the Silver and Feodum piles as quick as you can while your opponent dawdles trying to get Provinces. Do not buy any Provinces yourself until you’ve secured enough VP to trounce them.

The Middle Ground

Unfortunately, most Silver gainers are not as dramatic as those mentioned above. However, that doesn’t mean Feodum is down for the count! In a game with BureaucratBureaucrat.jpg or SquireSquire.jpg, while emptying the Silver pile entirely is unrealistic, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect to have 10 or more Silvers by the end of the game. In such cases, Feodum becomes a cheaper DuchyDuchy.jpg, and another option for three-piling. While it’s no longer the star of the show, it can still be a nice supplement to your main VP from Provinces.

If you’re aiming to use Feodum in this way, try to get your Silver gainer early. Not only do the Silvers help your Feoda, they also, as previously discussed, make buying Provinces easier.

Some Silver gainers can also trash. Jack of All TradesJack of All Trades.jpg, HermitHermit.jpg, and AmuletAmulet.jpg can also fill this middle ground role, but don’t mind if you get a Feodum early, just to trash for the Silvers inside. Jack and Hermit are better for this, as they can trash and gain Silver at the same time. In such cases, if you’re uncontested, the Feodum pile is unlikely to empty, so you’re not really losing any VP, as you can always just pick up another one, now worth 1VP more!

A word of warning, though: in a lot of these cases, there’s usually something better to do on the board than just slowly trickle Silvers into your deck, so keep an eye out for faster or more productive strategies.

Silver Slogs

In junking games, particularly with CultistCultist.jpg, the game can be extended significantly as players wade through Ruins or CursesCurse.jpg.

Popping the Piñata

But what about trashers that don’t gain Silver? Mass trashers like ChapelChapel.jpg and DonateDonate.jpg see Feodum as an early game boost; in this case, you don’t really care about the VP, but the 3 Silvers are very nice. Working with only a single card trasher is a little risky, as it’s harder to line them up, but with remodelers like UpgradeUpgrade.jpg or RemakeRemake.jpg, or trash for benefit cards like SalvagerSalvager.jpg or BishopBishop.jpg, it can be worth it, especially since a popped Feodum provides three more pieces of fodder for later use. Upgrade can actually get a significant amount of VP from Feoda, as it can convert Estates into Silvers, Silvers into Feoda, and Feoda into more Upgrades.

TraderTrader.jpg is an interesting example: it can generate a lot of Silvers for Feodum, but requires fodder to do so. Feodum is the victory card that counts treasures that you always knew I’d make. What you didn’t know is that it would only count Silvers. If Coppers count, man, that’s like a Gardens deck, we built that one already. I mean it’s different but whatever. If Golds count, man, I already wanted a deck with a lot of Gold. So it only counts Silvers. And to help that out, it’s a Silver piñata. You might even buy one just to crack it open, with no plan of really going for Feodums.

Feodum does something when you trash it. There are a bunch of cards like that in this set. There’s really only so much you can do with the trash directly, like Graverobber, but you can do tons of things based on cards getting trashed. And if you are the kind of person who likes card combos, these cards are for you. For example you can just Remodel a Feodum into a Feodum, for the 3 Silvers. Look at that.

Secret History

At last, the victory card that counts treasures that you've been waiting for. As explained in the preview, it only counts Silvers in order to be more different from Gardens and not just favor the kind of deck you already wanted. Making it a Silver piñata seemed cool and the card was just like that from the beginning.
