Squire is cheap and offers a diverse set of abilities, which can make it a good support card in many different situations. It furthermore hampers the efforts to draw your whole deck, as like a treasure, it counts as a ‘stop’ card. Thus, with a smithy variant, you end up with one more card than you started with rather than two, which is a pretty big deal when you are trying to run chains of actions together, and the {{Cost|1}} just doesn’t make up for this. It can still work if other things set up well, but it is harder to make happen than with most any other village.

But, I hear you ask, what about {{Card|Fishing Village}}? Fishing Village also only gives you {{Cost|1}} and 2 Actions on its turns and doesn’t draw cards, and it’s like the best village there is! Generally, in this kind of deck, you can have [[cantrip]]-with-bonuses, usually either some {{Card|Laboratory|Lab}} or [[Peddler variant]], but while this is still possible here, it tends to be slightly less effective, as this pushes out the Squire’s usefulness. As normal, it’s all opportunity cost here. In any case, such decks with take the Silver-flood-ability of Squire when it doesn’t come with other Actions and use the village-ness when it does.

I actually must admit, I have gotten this wrong a lot. So generally, you want the Silvers. The exceptions to this rule are if you want to run something which cares about Copper (potentially {{Card|Apothecary}}, {{Card|Coppersmith}}, {{Card|Counting House}}), something very unusual with piles running out, if you want to use at least one of the extra Buys on something other than Copper, or for a card like {{Card|Gardens}}. With Gardens, {{Cost|4}} isn’t much harder to hit with Coppers than Silvers, and you get an extra card for points at the end.

Squire is the complement to StewardSteward.jpg that you always knew I'd make. Okay maybe you didn't figure that one out. You get a choice of three things that Steward doesn't get you, plus $1 in the bargain. It's a pretty nifty $2, just for that. And if he gets trashed, then you get an attack, any attack on the table. You can RemodelRemodel.jpg a Squire into a Remodel and a FamiliarFamiliar.jpg. A major theme of Dark Ages is upgrading, whatever that means. Actually I think I can explain it: it's, turning cards into other cards. Some cards turn other cards into other other cards, like GraverobberGraverobber.jpg does, but some cards turn themselves into other cards, and Squire is one of those.

[edit] Secret History

The first version of this, from way back when, was the not-so-similar-looking '+1 card +1 action, you may play an attack or buy a Silver.' It was a village that only played attacks, or a +buy that only worked on Silver. When it turned out that I wouldn't be doing more cards that let you buy cards in the action phase, due to Black Market being confusing, I dropped buying Silvers (at that point 'buy a Treasure') and added, 'when trashed, gain an attack.' Now the card was just a blank cycler in games with no attacks. For a while I thought that was okay, but people sure complained about it. I made it, 'when trashed, gain an attack or silver,' but of course some games there's no way to trash it either. I liked the bottom, so the solution was to give it a spiffy top that you would always be happy with. And there it is, a counterpart to Steward. It took "gain a Silver" from Beggar and well that worked out too.

[edit] Is the on-trash bonus a problem with expensive attacks?

Donald X. was asked if designing expensive attacks would be prohibited by them being easily gained with Squire, and if he would regret Squire. Donald X. remarks:

I don't regret that although you're correct that it's a thing. I would either be accepting that some games would have that combo (which does require a third piece - the way to trash Squire - unless the big attack is also a way to trash Squire and even then that probably delays you a lot), or would be tweaking the new card to get rid of it. That doesn't sound so bad though. I couldn't make an $8 attack where all $8 was being paid for the attack; people would hate it. And if it's a big positive effect plus a minor attack, probably I can happily take off the attack part.
