Strategy
Storeroom is a terminal sifter and payload card offering both +Buy and a discard-for-benefit effect. It can therefore serve multiple purposes in a deck.
- Storeroom is a passable source of +Buy. If this is its only feature you're interested in, there are often better alternatives, but a copy or two of Storeroom added later in the game can still be helpful if you have the terminal space, especially if its other abilities can be useful.
- Storeroom can discard cards to generate virtual coin, so you can use multiple copies of it as payload in several different kinds of decks. This is most effective in decks with strong draw but poor trashing (where you can discard your junk), decks with overdraw (e.g. with Scrying Pool), or decks using draw-to-X. Cursed Village and Hunting Lodge are fairly good enablers of Storeroom payload, because they offer both draw and additional terminal space.
- Storeroom is a sifter. While it is terminal and therefore liable to draw Action cards dead without village support, its ability to discard and draw an arbitrary number of cards provides good flexibility and cycling, and is especially useful for setting up clean reshuffles. Because of these two traits and its ability to convert hand size into payload, Storeroom can function well alongside non-Action cards such as Potion in the early game, when your main goal is sifting to them. However, because Storeroom is handsize-negative, using more than one or two copies for sifting is usually inefficient.
- Storeroom is a fairly good way to activate discard-for-benefit effects such as Tunnel and Village Green, as it gives you two chances to discard cards and a fairly large search space in which to find your intended target.
Given Storeroom’s flexibility in the number of cards it allows you to discard, there’s a fair amount of choice in how to use it within a turn. Generally, your goals will be the following:
- Sifting to find your important cards, which entails discarding as much as needed to draw to them.
- Discarding as many excess or junk cards as possible to generate .
- Practicing good reshuffle control, both by avoiding bad reshuffle triggers containing many stop cards (possibly discarded by an earlier Storeroom), and by setting up clean reshuffles when possible, by discarding and drawing exactly as many cards remain in your shuffle.
While this first goal may require you to play Storeroom somewhat early in your turn, the other two goals will generally incentivize you to play it later in your turn, after drawing with your other cards.
Storeroom synergizes very well with Stampede, as it lets you generate significant without putting many cards into play, while the draw from the Horses can in turn be converted into a large amount of . With a deck consisting of two Storerooms, a Gold, two Silvers, and your starting cards, you can repeatedly buy a Province and Stampede, setting up the other Storeroom for next turn by discarding one more card than you have remaining in your shuffle.
