Talk:Cauldron

This Cauldron ruling "If gaining your 3rd Action causes you to play a Cauldron (e.g. you gain a CourierCourier.jpg, play it with City-stateCity-state.jpg, and then play a Cauldron), you'll give out a CurseCurse.jpg" got deleted. :(

There are three sources of evidence for it:

-This interaction works on the online version.

-All of this is happening in the "gained a CourierCourier.jpg" window, so adding another effect in that window will mean it works. There are plenty of examples of this kind of thing in Dominion.

-If playing a SilverSilver.jpg causes you to play a MerchantMerchant.jpg (SaunaSauna.jpg trashes CatacombsCatacombs.jpg which gains a MerchantMerchant.jpg which you play with InnovationInnovation.jpg), you get +$1 from the MerchantMerchant.jpg. http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=20153.msg826012#msg826012. So the Cauldron thing is just an extrapolation of that.

Now is something like this really obscure and edge case-y? Probably yes. Surely no regular player is going to come across this scenario, and then go to the Cauldron page for answers. Does that mean this shouldn't be on the wiki? I dunno, you tell me.

Fun fact, the Merchant page used to have a rules clarification indicating that if playing a Silver causes you to play a Merchant, you do not get the $1. I removed that rules clarification because I thought it was redundant (with the rules clarification about playing Silver before playing Merchant)... but it sounds like we should actually make a rules clarification going the other way?

I guess both here and on the Merchant page, the issue is that people find the rule unintuitive and tend to want to 'fix' the rules clarifications, so probably we need find a way to cite that forum post or something similar...

I probably should be citing quotes from Donald X. whenever possible, since people don't believe everything they read on the internet (which is perfectly reasonable). One problem is that I'm lazy and don't want to go back and add citations to everything. Another problem is that a lot of rulings are extrapolations from existing rulings (such as this Cauldron one, or how Basilica/Nomads is an extrapolation of Emporium/Duplicate), and there aren't going to be citations for everything. -DZ
