Marquis is a powerful card that makes a strong addition both in big money and engine strategies. Its high price point, however, makes it both hard to buy early and hard to buy in quantity. The fact that it offers +1 Buy makes it a very powerful standalone action. The requirement of discarding down to 10 cards is not particularly restrictive: in most engines there is a way to play cards from your hand to reduce your handsize to 6 (optimal to draw as much as possible without discarding) before playing a second Marquis, but even if you end up having to discard, the discard can simply be seen as a sifting effect, making your engine resilient to greening.

When played in isolation, it functions like a Council Room that does not provide any benefit to the other players.

When played following a Village, it still draws 4 cards, which is usually enough to set off a drawing engine. However, other villages that do not provide any card draw will weaken it, turning it into an expensive Smithy with +1 Buy.

Discard for benefit can synergize with Marquis, but typically only when the handsize reduction is optional. Vault is particularly nice to this end, and if your opponents also have Marquis, they will be less likely to benefit from the option to discard two cards and draw one.

Handsize attacks are particularly harsh on Marquis; for example Militia reduces it to providing +2 Cards which is extraordinarily weak for its cost. You also need to consider whether there is a viable path towards building the type of deck that would include Marquis.

Because the first Marquis purchase will come well into the game, you either need a fast path to get to 6, or a deck that is strong even before Marquis is purchased. So, in a money strategy you might make Marquis your second terminal action purchased, whereas in an engine you might buy one or more marquis in the mid-game in order to make your otherwise-strong engine even more powerful and more resilient to greening. Relying on Marquis as the main source of draw to get an engine going, however, will often be too slow, and will require the buying of silvers that clog up the engine.

If you manage to reach 6 in a slog, buying a single Marquis can be a good buy as it usually guarantees a decent 8-card turn.

For strumphf's 2022 advent calendar, Donald X. went in-depth on the development of Marquis and the outtake split pile it started in.

|Text=Started out in a split pile. It was too hard to get to, we just weren't seeing it much. It wasn't great to only have 4 of either. The premise was a card where you discard down to a hand size; it felt like I could get away with Madman here. For a bit it tried also doubling Buys.
