Other Rules clarifications
Other Rules clarifications
* All Wayfarers change their costs to the last gained card, including ones in other players' hands.
+
* If the cost of the last card gained changes after it was gained, the cost of Wayfarer changes too. For example, if you gain a Peddler when it costs 8, and then play 2 Action cards, Peddler and therefore Wayfarer both now cost 4 in the Buy phase.
* If the cost of the last card gained changes after it was gained, the cost of Wayfarer changes too. For example, if you gain a Fisherman when it costs 5, Wayfarer costs 5. But if you then reshuffle, emptying out your discard pile, that changes the cost of Fisherman to 2 and thus Wayfarer's cost becomes 2 as well.
+
* The cost of Wayfarer can change while resolving other cards. For example, if you play Stonemason and trash a Wayfarer which costs 6, you then gain a cheaper card such as Duchy which costs 5; then you gain a second card costing less than Wayfarer which now costs 5.
* The cost of Wayfarer can change while resolving other cards. For example, if you play a Stonemason and trash a 6-cost Wayfarer, you first gain a cheaper card, and then you gain a card costing less than that card. So if you first gain a Duchy, you would then gain a card costing less than Wayfarer (which now costs 5).
+
* Once a card is gained, Wayfarer's cost-changing effect overrides other cost-changing effects. For example, if there's a Favor token (from Family of Inventors on Wayfarers, it costs 5. But if you gain a Silver, Wayfarer will cost 3 (and the Favor token has no effect).
+
* If you get a card through means other than gaining it (e.g. exiling it from the Supply with Camel Train) or exchanging it (e.g. with Trader), that won't affect Wayfarer's cost.

Strategy
Wayfarer is not usually a good buy at 6, but can be quite strong if obtained more cheaply. It tends to be slightly more powerful than Smithy; at worst it is equivalent, but it has the added benefit of gaining a Silver, as well as a higher price on turn start which can be useful for Remodel or other cards that benefit from trashing cards of higher cost. With a gainer or +Buy it is usually easy to acquire along with another cheaper card.

The gain of a silver is better in money-based strategies than in an engine. But a problem with Wayfarer as the centerpiece of a big money terminal draw strategy is that if it is obtained through a terminal action that gives +Buy or gaining of a cheap card, buying it results in a high chance of action collision, so this strategy is not usually viable if the only source of +Buy or gaining a cheap card is through a terminal action. If there is alt-treasure that offers +Buy, however, you can obtain it with a Silver on the same turn. The repeated gaining of silvers not only increases early buying power substantially, but it also makes your late game deck less likely to stall after buying victory cards.

Wayfarer is slightly less desireable in Engines, since its Silver-gaining ability is less likely to be used, but its presence can still be beneficial if it enables you to pick up a Smithy-like card cheaply and thus build the engine more quickly. In some boards it may be the only or best card draw available. The fact that +Buy and gainers already facilitate engines tends to make this card more likely to be part of a viable strategy.

Forge, not normally the strongest card, synergizes with Wayfarer in multiple ways: not only can it be used to combine Wayfarer with a 2-cost card to make a Province, but after the province is gained, Wayfarers then become worth 8 and subsequent plays can directly trash Wayfarers to gain a province. The fact that gaining a card changes the cost of Wayfarer can sometimes allow you to manipulate Forge so that the math adds up the way you want. Gained silvers can also provide fodder for the forge.

|Text= During previews week, the card that was the most scary was Wayfarer. Now with some time passed, I feel pretty happy with the set power-level-wise. Wayfarer did not need to be as strong as it is, but it isn't ruining the game.
