Additional rules
* <p>Intrigue has cards that give players a choice between two or more options. A player given a choice picks any choice, even if unable to do the instruction, then does as much of it as they can. </p>For example, Sylvia plays Steward with one card left in her hand. She can pick the "trash 2 cards from your hand" option despite only having one card in hand. If she picks that option, she trashes the one card in her hand. Sometimes one of the options of a card with a choice is to make +Cost. To track the Cost, players can push the card up slightly from the line of played cards.

* <p>Intrigue has three Victory cards that have another type as well: and These cards are both types for all purposes. </p>For example, since Nobles is an Action card, it can be played in the Action phase, can be trashed from the Supply with and so on; since it is a Victory card, it is worth VP when scoring, is put into a player's hand due to and so on.

|Text=Intrigue has existed in many forms over the years. It came into being as 12 cards in 2006, immediately became 15 cards, got expanded to 20 cards not too long afterwards, stayed at 20 for a long time, although cards paraded through it, got tried at 16 briefly, went back to 20, then made the leap to 25. Originally the set had three sub-themes; one of them (one-shots) gradually left, and another (decision-making cards) got expanded. The other theme (victory cards that do something) stayed as is but got cards to supplement it. Flavor-wise it always had Intrigue as a tentative theme, but it got much more Intrigue-like during development.

- There was an attack that could steal any type of card, not just treasures. I had a version that I thought was fair, but it slowed the game down way too much. That concept could still come back someday.

- There was a card in the Gardens family that was worth 1VP per 4 cards in your deck costing up to 2, other than Curse and Confusion (a Curse-like card that just did nothing). Gardens is a better version of that concept; limiting it to cheap cards doesn't change much, since cheap cards are what you can most readily buy with Gardens. I mean it's different but not interestingly so. And counting Curse is better than not counting them. This card predated Gardens, which was originally designed for a later set.

Swindler was not close to the chopping block. Closer cards included:

- Harem. It's called Harem. It would have left but it shows a real person.

- Baron. It's not so fun to think the move is to open with it and then draw it with no Estate.
+
For more detail on the design of the cards see Secret History of the Intrigue Cards or the cards themselves.

+
- Trading Post. I don't like how it's good turn one and sucks if you get it later.
+

+
- Minion. More hated than Swindler.
+

+
- Mining Village. It should trigger e.g. at start of buy phase, both for tracking and to save time considering it. But I couldn't just change that and call it Mining Village.
+

+
The last card to go was Coppersmith. Some people miss it. Possibly Baron or Trading Post would have been a better call.

If I were doing it over again, I'm sure I'd find more good things to fix for [ and Intrigue]. Torturer isn't what comes to my mind right away though for Intrigue. Trading Post is strong turn one and weak after that. Mining Village has poor timing / tracking, it would be better e.g. to trash it at the start of the Buy phase.

Torturer is a strong attack, but not in the same league as Ghost Ship / Ambassador / Mountebank in terms of how the game plays out. The idea wasn't to get rid of strong attacks; just, these attacks that mean you never see your deck. In the case of Goons, it was the combination of the attack and the fun part and costing 6; there's a new Militia in Allies, that concept hasn't died. And I mean Sea Witch and Clerk are not weak attacks, as you will find.
