In most games, this card tends to be limited in use to gaining {{Card|Silver}}, but it becomes dramatically stronger in the presence of desirable alt-treasure, especially those costing {{Cost|4}} as they tend to be stronger than Silver but can still be gained by this card. {{Card|Gondola}} is a particularly nice combo and easy to utilize. In terms of immediate buying power, this card is usually only as strong as a silver, which makes it only worthwhile in the case where the gaining of silver is sufficiently beneficial.

This card can function well as a gainer in engines that have some ability to trash the silvers or other treasures for benefit. Ideally the engine would be set up so that you can spend the treasure this turn, and then trash it on the next turn.

This card also is powerful in a slog, where it improves the quality of your deck in addition to providing immediate buying power, but its high price point makes it so that it is not always the best purchase to this end.

{{Quote|Text= Initially it played the card; now it goes to your hand. Another one under frequent attack. It's just some Explorer, and can't even get Gold; I dunno what to tell you, Dominion needs some simple cards.

I remain happy to have done [Silver Mine]. They can't all have a million words and require non-supply piles and do something no card has done that generates a dozen-page rules thread.
