I just ran a couple of simulations comparing BM with always buying nobles rather than gold. Similar to the analysis of the Harem strategy this Nobles strategy consistently beats BM without nobles. It is actually slightly stronger than the Harem strategy. This indicates that the statement in the final paragraph comparing duchies and nobles might not be accurate.
