Astrolabe is a powerful and versatile card, and buying at least one of them is beneficial in a wide range of circumstances. It is at the same price point as {{Card|Silver}} and offers the same total buying power, but spread over two turns, and it contributes buying power on the second turn without requiring a card to be played. On top of this, it gives +1 Buy on both turns. It is thus a reliable and powerful source of +Buy, and where +Buy is beneficial, it is much more valuable than a Silver. Furthermore, because it is not an action, there is no risk of drawing it dead, so it can be added to decks without +Actions cards, such as in a Terminal Draw Big Money strategy, to offer +Buy that is usually not available in these decks.

In an engine, it is often more desireable than terminal actions providing +Buy. By staying in play two turns but only taking up a space in the hand on one turn, it slightly reduces the chance that the engine will fail to start.

{{Card|Pendant}} makes Astrolabe particularly valuable, as Astrolabe being in play increases the value of Pendant, and the presence of Pendant in a deck with other Alt-treasure often reaches high values that benefit from +Buy.

{{Quote|Text=Astrolabe is a Treasure - Duration! And not something like {{Card|Contract}} that manages to avoid any issues if you trash it from play. What can it mean? Well, when the time comes to reprint the sets with {{Event|Bonfire}} etc., those cards will get errata so that they don't mess up with Durations. And then so much for trashing Astrolabe in a confusing way. So anyway, Astrolabe itself is just a vanilla Duration card, but it's a Treasure and well just look at it. So pretty.

{{Quote|Text=All these years it has been clear that I could do Treasure - Durations, but they were limited by the need to not cause tracking issues with e.g. {{Card|Counterfeit}}. The option was always there, but I never made any. Finally {{Set|Allies}} went for it with, at one point, five of them, but in the end just Contract. But you know, how many cards really cause these tracking issues? It's not many. And it's not like you want to trash your Duration treasures with them so much. Maybe I could just errata all of them. And that's the plan! This opened the door to doing just a straight vanilla Treasure - Duration, and here it is.
