Shy is one of the more powerful traits in that it doesn't just tweak the game but can create whole new dynamics, fundamentally changing not only a single card, but the whole board. Because the Shy effect does not use an action to play, it effectively turns any card into a {{Card|Laboratory}}, a card that costs {{Cost|5}}, with the restriction that only one can be used in this way per turn. For this reason, it is almost always worth buying at least one Shy card that costs {{Cost|4}} or less, especially in the mid-game once your average card value has become higher. But this is not the only use or benefit of the Shy card. The fact that the Shy card is usually powerful, especially when it costs {{Cost|4}} or less, can speed up games somewhat, even in the absence of any type of overt synergy.

When the Shy card is a terminal action, the function can provide the benefit of avoiding action collision, thus enabling you to purchase two terminal actions in the absence of +Actions, earlier than you normally would, as part of a [[big money]] strategy. This boosts the viability of these strategies over alternate options, especially when a card is useful in these strategies but not in an [[engine]].

There are some strong combos with Shy. One is {{Card|Trail}}; a Shy trail is almost overpowered, as it costs only {{Cost|4}} and can be discarded at the start of your turn in order to start your turn with 2 actions and 7 Cards. {{Card|Weaver}} is yet another card that combines similarly.

There are relatively few cards or situations that conflict with a Shy card, but an exception is cards that benefit from small handsize, such as {{Card|Library}}, {{Card|Minion}}, or {{Card|Souk}}.
