To discard a card is to move it into your discard pile. This is done every turn during your Clean-up phase, but can also be done at other times as part of the effect of a card. Cards that you play that cause you to discard from your hand are generally sifters, while cards that cause other players to discard from their hand are handsize attacks. There are several cards that do something when discarded from your play area (generally during Clean-up), and one card, TunnelTunnel.jpg, that only has an effect when it's discarded at any other time. There are also several cards that can look through your discard pile, though this is generally not allowed.

When a card is gained (through buying or otherwise), it goes to your discard pile, unless otherwise specified; however, this does not count as "discarding" the card. ChancellorChancellor.jpg, ScavengerScavenger.jpg, Trusty SteedTrusty Steed.jpg, MessengerMessenger.jpg, and PossessionPossession.jpg also have effects that can move cards to a discard pile without officially "discarding" them.

Official Rules

  • Unless otherwise specified, discarded cards are from the player’s hand.
  • When a player discards a card, he places the discarded card face-up onto his Discard pile. When discarding several cards at once, the player need not show all cards he is discarding to his opponents, but player may need to show how many cards he is discarding (for example, when playing the CellarCellar.jpg).
  • The top card of a player’s Discard pile is always visible.
  • A player is allowed to count how many cards are left in his Deck, but not in his Discard pile. A player may not look through his Deck or his Discard pile.
