Until your next turn, when another player plays an Attack card, it doesn't affect you. At the start of your next turn, +. This is gained to your hand (instead of your discard pile). |
Guardian is a Night-Duration card from Nocturne. Like Lighthouse, it protects you from Attacks until your next turn and gives you + when the turn starts. It does nothing when you play it, but when you gain it it goes straight to your hand, so it can be played immediately. Thus it can be a useful opportunistic buy when you expect your opponent is about to play an Attack.

FAQ
Official FAQ
- Since Night is after the Buy phase, normally you can play this the turn you buy it.
- When you play Guardian, you are unaffected by Attack cards other players play between then and your next turn (even if you want one to affect you).
- Guardian does not prevent you from using Reactions when other players play Attacks.
Other rules clarifications
- If you gain this onto your deck (with e.g. Armory), you didn't gain it to your discard pile, so Guardian's ability doesn't trigger and it stays on your deck.
- This protects you for the rest of the turn when you play it. So if after playing a Guardian, you gain a Duchy with Vampire, this will protect you from another player's Black Cat.
- Unlike Lighthouse, this offers no protection during your next turn. This means that on the turn after you play a Guardian, you can still get attacked by another player's Black Cat.

Trivia
Secret History
Early on the set had a village that went into your next hand. I just told you about that. It was great so I thought I should try a second card like that, and the obvious concept was a Moat. At first it was a pure Reaction that was set aside for your next hand when you got it, and came with a Gold; then the Gold idea went on Skulk, and Guardian changed to be a Night card that gave you a Boon next turn, and went to your hand when gained. The Boon was too slow (since playing Guardian doesn't use up an Action), so now it just gives you +.
