+1 Card |
Joust is an Action card from the second edition of Cornucopia & Guilds. It is a Peddler variant that can earn you a Reward if you line it up with a Province in hand.
Joust replaces the similar, but more complex, removed first-edition Cornucopia card Tournament.
FAQ
Official FAQ
- Use one copy of each Reward for games with 2 players, and two copies of each Reward for games with 3-6 players.
- With 3 or more players, it's okay to gain a Reward you already have a copy of.
- To gain a Reward you have to set aside a Province from your hand, discarding that Province in Clean-up with your other cards.
- If all Rewards have been claimed, you can still set aside a Province, but this won't do anything special for you.
- Rewards are not in the Supply, and can only be gained via playing Joust.

So at last it's come to this. Tournament is crazy complex - giving you a 2x2 grid of pay-offs to grok - and while some people love it, many hate it. I could try to make a version that was less hated and more loved and also simpler.
And that card is Joust. There's no pay-off grid, no blocking; it's less snowbally, though of course still snowbally, and it's more of a commitment to have one in your deck. And there's no Followers. In fact the prizes are all different, though a couple are basically just renamed. Furthermore there are 6 different ones, and you use 2 of each for games with 3+ players.
Secret History
The new Tournament. So you don't automatically have it in your deck, it costs . It has no blocking, since people didn't enjoy that part, and also it was complicated; now there's no payoff grid, you just get a Reward or don't. You set aside a Province so the same Province can't make you multiple Rewards in a turn, to reduce snowball-y-ness. And then, the Prizes are replaced with Rewards. Princess survives as Renown, and Courser is a slightly-simpler Trusty Steed. Demesne is a better Bag of Gold. And then Followers and Diadem are just gone, replaced with Housecarl (on-theme for Cornucopia), Huge Turnip (getting in Coffers from Guilds), and Coronet (just some new thing). There are 6 Rewards rather than 5, and also 2 copies of each for multiplayer. And then, instead of one being the only +Buy and one the only village, there are two with +Buy and three that can village.
Retrospective
Well it went over great among the loud voices on the internet. And I wasn't confident it would, so hooray! I suspect it could be weaker and still be good, but I'm not sad about it.
