This turn, when you gain an Action card, +1VP.

Collection is a Treasure card from the second edition of Prosperity. It rewards you with VP for gaining Actions.

It replaces the removed first-edition card Goons, which had a similar VP effect but led to more frustrating games.

FAQ

Official FAQ

  • You get +1VP for each Action card you gain, whether bought, or gained some other way.
  • Multiple copies of this are cumulative; if you have two Collections in play and buy a Village, you'll get +2VP.

Other Rules clarifications

  • You only get VP for Actions you gain after you play the Collection; it doesn't retroactively give you points for cards you gained earlier in the turn.
  • If the Collection leaves play (for instance, because you trashed it with Counterfeit), you still get VP from it for the rest of the turn.

Ah, Goons. You've made me so many VP tokens. It's good times. Except for the Militia part. And then you get Goons first and Militia them so they can't afford Goons. And then Militia every turn. It just sucks the fun out of the other part, which is so good.

Collection is trying to be, not just a Goons replacement, but also a different card. I didn't just want Goons minus the Militia. So it's a Treasure, making it easy to play multiples, but cares about Actions specifically, so you can't buy up Coppers for it, or Victory cards. It's a different version of the Goons experience.

Secret History

The new Goons. It only triggers on gaining Actions, just to make it play a little more differently and interestingly. And it's a Treasure because that's fun, and well not a Militia, that was the important part. The first version was a terminal action; then there was a Treasure that only made $1, and then a Treasure that made $2 but gave VP for cards you hadn't gained copies of yet that turn, instead of Actions.

Infinite VP with Horses

Players can get into a stalemate if they both play 5 Collections and buy 2 Stampedes every turn, collecting 50 VP each turn forever.

We also knew about Collection / Stampede; at one point there was some focused testing there, to make sure that those games had enough gameplay. I didn't put in any work on testing tweaks since it wasn't deemed to be a problem. A big thing for me was, none of the other Horse cards seemed at all a problem (not that they aren't good with Collection; just, not a problem). And Stampede isn't in Prosperity. It's a rare combo, like oh Counting House / Travelling Fair.

Retrospective

No contest for me, obv. on the pro-Collection side. Goons is great except for being a Militia. It's a Militia though. Costing $6 meant you got to die horribly to your opponent's earlier Goons, which they lucked into. But given that I was replacing the card, I went ahead and also made it different other ways, which still sounds great to me, hooray.
