When shuffling this, you may look through your remaining deck, and may put this anywhere in the shuffled cards. |
Stash is a promotional Treasure card. When played, it is no different than a Silver. However, it has a different back than other cards—when you shuffle, you can put your Stashes anywhere in your deck, and you can always see where Stashes are in your deck and your opponents' decks or hands.

FAQ
Official FAQ
- This is a Treasure worth .
- When you're shuffling, and Stash is one of the cards you're shuffling, you can put it anywhere in your deck.
- You can't look at the fronts of the cards you're shuffling; Stash has a different card back so you know where it is.
- If you have multiple copies of Stash, you can clump them together, or spread them out however you want.
- If there are any cards in your deck that aren't being shuffled, such as when you had fewer than 5 cards left in your deck when you needed to draw a new hand for next turn, you can look through those remaining cards before putting them on top of your newly shuffled deck, though you can't put Stash in among those remaining cards.
- If a card tells you to shuffle your entire deck, like Inn (from Dominion: Hinterlands), and Stash is in your deck, there is no "remaining deck" that isn't being shuffled, so you don't get to look at the front of any cards.
- Because Stash has a different back, you'll be able to tell when it's in other players' hands, or set aside for a Haven (from Dominion: Seaside), and so on.
Other Rules clarifications
- When you shuffle your entire deck (with e.g. Annex), you can reposition any Stashes in your deck. Any Stashes that you leave in your discard pile are not being shuffled.
- Unlike Order of Astrologers (which doesn't let you spend Favors during setup), if Stash is Inherited, you can choose where it goes when you shuffle your starting deck.
Strategy
Stash is more often than not an overpriced Silver and as such is extremely weak. The benefit it offers over Silver is marginal and rarely useful. Because it costs , there will almost always be a better card to gain at that price point, which means it has a high opportunity cost, and thus Stash is a card you will almost never add to your deck.
The best use for Stash's ability is usually to bottomdeck it. This is because Stash is a stop card and it is generally best to have your deck control cards (draw cards, villages, etc.) on the top of your shuffle so that you can draw your payload later in the turn. While in this way Stash is able to guarantee that it interferes less than other forms of stop card payload with your ability to draw your deck, it is only a minor improvement over fully random shuffles, and the reduction in risk is very rarely worth using Stash over other, stronger forms of payload. Occasionally, it is possible to take advantage of knowing that Stash is on the bottom of your deck, for example with Magpie.
Less commonly, Stash’s ability can be used to effectively clump multiple copies together within a shuffle, allowing you to guarantee hitting a price point. While you can topdeck four Stashes in this way to guarantee a Province, this only works once per shuffle, and topdecking four stop cards greatly reduces your cycling towards your next shuffle. Additionally, this can be slow as it requires you to buy multiple Stashes, and likely loses to an opponent who can build to score with more than one Province a turn. Deck discarding cards such as Messenger can help solve some of these problems, as they can help you get through your shuffles more quickly to activate and find your Stashes. Scavenger is a notable synergy, as with two Scavengers and three Stashes you can alternate between your Scavengers to discard your deck and topdeck your other Scavenger, topdecking your three Stashes when you shuffle thereafter. Ideally, this will eventually lead to reliably drawing a hand of one Scavenger and three Stashes, enough to buy a Province. It is worth noting, however, that this can be disrupted by Attacks such as Minion, or by simply drawing your second Scavenger.

Secret History
Stash had two issues. First, I didn't have the different-back mechanic yet. So like you set them aside, or dug through your discard pile for them. It was not going to be pretty rules-wise, since by default you can't look through your discard pile. And second, it was not that interesting. There are some cute interactions, but on the whole, it didn't seem necessarily worth a slot in the set. So it left.
Later I realized I could have a different card back, solving the rules issues. I immediately put it on a list of potential promos, with an eye towards putting it in an expansion if it wasn't needed as a promo. It was though, and there it is. To me this is the ideal promo: exotic-looking, but not actually complex; interesting when you read about it, but not something I'm sad didn't make an expansion.Retrospective
