[edit] Official FAQ
- When a player plays Duchess, each player secretly looks at the top card of their deck, and either discards it or puts it back, their choice.
- When a player gains a Duchy in a game with Duchess in the Supply, that player may also gain a Duchess, putting it into their discard pile.
[edit] Strategy
Before it was removed, Duchess was a cheap yet weak terminal silver. Because it is terminal and its additional discarding effect helps all players, Duchess usually compares unfavorably with both Silver and buying nothing at all. However, since it only costs , buying a Duchess rather than nothing can occasionally be worth it in the early game, for example on a / opening split. Picking up a Duchess in this situation makes sense when the economy is useful and you don’t need the terminal space for something else. Duchess can also be gained for free after gaining a Duchy. In the late game after an extended greening phase, the average quality of your deck may be quite low, at which point a Duchess can be better than nothing. The ability to gain Duchess when gaining Duchy also makes it useful in a Duke slog.
Rarely, Duchess can also be used as cheap fodder for effects that require any Action card, for example Way of the Horse or Advance. It can also sometimes be useful in draw-to-X decks which have lots of spare terminal space, though this is somewhat rare.
