[edit] Strategy
Academy is a very valuable Project in many games, as it frees up resources to be spent on draw or payload, and may even enable an engine where one might not otherwise be possible. If you anticipate gaining many Action cards over the course of the game, Academy can heavily reduce or even eliminate the need to gain other sources of +Actions; even if you still need some villages, Villagers from Academy provide an excellent source of reliability, as they can be spent whenever they’re required.
Academy can be particularly useful in the presence of gainers, such as Inventor, and sources of +Buy, especially if the Kingdom offers plenty of cheap cantrips or other Action cards that you’re happy to keep adding to your deck. Gainers tend to be terminal, but Academy makes them effectively non-terminal or even villages, and you’ll be able to keep topping up your supply of Villagers by playing your gainers even if there’s an extended end-game phase in which your other gains are primarily or exclusively used on Victory cards. Horse-gainers, e.g. Cavalry, are very powerful examples of such.
If other sources of +Actions are weak, unreliable or expensive, Academy may also be very attractive even without an easy way to keep gaining extra Action cards throughout the game. For example, the extra Villagers from Academy may be enough to keep a deck that relies on terminal draw for draw functioning well enough to get to the end of the game in a Kingdom that lacks other villages.
Academy is not usually best purchased in the opening even if you have the option, as you have no immediate use for Villagers and it’s likely that a card will provide more benefit on the first few shuffles. However, it can be a good choice fairly shortly after that, and sometimes as your first purchase, especially if you anticipate needing many Villagers relative to the number of Action cards you'll be gaining. Academy is unlikely to be a good use of in most money strategies or in other situations in which you don’t anticipate needing the Villagers, e.g. if the draw is non-terminal and the payload primarily Treasure-based.
