+2 Cards When another player plays an Attack card, you may first reveal this from your hand, to be unaffected by it. |
Moat is an Action and Reaction card from the Base set. When played, it gives +2 Cards, and if it is in your hand when an Attack card is played, then you are immune to the attack. Moat is usually bought for the Reaction part, because +2 Cards is relatively weak and outclassed by most other cards. Additionally, it is more often useful in games with three or more players, since it will be more likely to defend against attacks than in two player games.

FAQ
Official FAQ
- An Attack card says "Attack" on the bottom line; in this set, Bandit, Bureaucrat, Militia, and Witch are Attacks.
- When another player plays an Attack card, you may reveal a Moat from your hand, before the Attack does anything, to be unaffected by the Attack - you do not reveal cards to Bandit, or put a Victory card on your deck for Bureaucrat, or discard for Militia, or gain a Curse for Witch.
- Moat stays in your hand, and can still be played on your next turn.
- Moat does not stop anything an Attack does to other players, or for the player who played it; it just protects you personally.
- Moat can also be played on your turn for +2 Cards.
- If multiple Attacks are played on a turn or in a round of turns, you may reveal Moat for as many of them as you want.
Other Rules clarifications
- Using a Moat to block an Attack does not give you +2 cards at the time; you only get the +2 cards when you play the Moat during the Action phase of your own turn.
- The ONLY thing that determines whether a card is an Attack card is whether it says "Attack" on the bottom. Not all cards which can hurt you are Attack cards, and not all Attack cards will hurt you.
- You can only reveal Moat when an Attack card is played, not when it is bought or gained, even if it affects you at that time.
- If an Attack card allows the player who played it to make a decision, like Minion or Pirate Ship, you must decide whether to reveal Moat before the player decides what function of the Attack card to use.
Strategy Article
No comprehensive strategy article for Moat has been written, and there is no comprehensive forum thread on Moat. It has been mentioned in this article by HiveMindEmulator, edited by theory.
Moat draws 2 cards, with its addition benefits as a reaction. It would have to be a really weak board for it to be worth playing it as a Big Money enabler. If you do, you probably don’t want more than a couple, since in the absence of trashing or spare actions, +2 cards isn’t a whole lot better than most of the time.
In 2-player, Moat is typically fairly weak at stopping attacks, since you need to have it in your hand at the right time and it's not actually very good when played as an action. You should carefully consider whether it's worth a turn to buy a moat that you'll then have in your deck for the rest of the game, on the chance that it MAY prevent a few attacks; maybe it's better to just take all the hits from the attacks, maybe it's better to counter-attack yourself instead of defending with Moat, or maybe there are other ways to deal with the attack besides blocking it. In cases where you absolutely must build an engine but there are no other +Cards sources available, Moat can be used for its +2 Cards; don't forget about that, though this use is admittedly fairly weak and situational.
Moat gets significantly better as you get more opponents, since you will be getting hit with attacks more often.

Card Art
Moat is the only card to have its art changed with the release of the second editions, albeit subtly (one Event, Pathfinding also had its artwork adjusted).
