Warehouse is a non-terminal sifter which lets you draw then discard cards, but reduces your hand size by one. Warehouse offers a degree of control over which cards you have in hand and rapid cycling, both of which are especially relevant if you lack full deck control, including in the early game. Specifically, the benefits are:
- You get to play your strong, newly added cards faster.
- You get more plays of key cards (for example, attacks like Witch, trashers like Catapult, or Travellers).
- You have better odds of colliding the right cards to further your gameplan, for example Remodel and Estate.
These benefits becomes less important when it is easy to achieve deck control quickly (for example, with Chapel or Donate).
Once you have achieved deck control, Warehouse can maintain relevance if you rely on finding specific cards or combinations of cards to have a good turn. This might be the case, for example, in a deck relying on villages and terminal draw. A couple copies of Warehouse can be very good for your reliability in such decks.
In some cases, when achieving complete deck control via thinning is difficult or impossible, Warehouse can be a viable alternative, allowing you to find your useful cards and draw past junk. When using Warehouse for this purpose, it is important to avoid triggering an unfavorable reshuffle with just the discarded junk, which could result in one or more dud turns. Using Warehouse this way has two main disadvantages compared to just removing all the junk from your deck. First, your deck is far less reliable; second, it makes it difficult to gain and play cards, which usually end up in your discard pile along with your discarded junk. Instead of simple overdraw you would need to have an effect that topdecks the gained cards (such as Way of the Seal), or that gets them out of your discard pile selectively (such as Mountain Village).
The hand size reduction aspect of Warehouse may alter its value in the following ways:
- If you don’t have particularly good cards to find or if most of your cards are of similar quality (e.g., all Coppers), the reduced number of cards may have a larger negative effect than the positive effect from having a better selection.
- Warehouse becomes worse in multiples, i.e. while extra copies give you a larger search space, each one also increases the chance that your hand will become too small to do anything useful.
- The negative impact of the hand size reduction is exacerbated if you already suffer from a reduced hand size due to a discard attack.
- In draw-to-X engines, Warehouse’s hand size reduction matters far less, as you will draw back up to a constant hand size anyway. In fact, Warehouse’s ability to discard significant numbers of cards that you cannot play during your Action phase (generally Treasures and Victory cards) often enables you to draw more effectively, as your hand size can now be spent on Action-based payload before playing your draw-to-X card.
Warehouse synergizes with cards that benefit from being discarded: if Gold is a good option for payload, then you can quickly add some to your deck with Warehouse and Tunnel. Moreover, using Warehouse with Village Green generates extra terminal space and is hand size neutral.
