FAQ
Official FAQ
- This can trigger multiple times in a turn, for cards gained different ways.
- For example you could play Groundskeeper, then play Engineer gaining an Estate and taking 1 , then in your Buy phase buy a Duchy taking another +1 .
- Multiple Groundskeepers are cumulative.
- If you Crown a Groundskeeper, there is still just one Groundskeeper in play, so you only get +1 per Victory card gained.
Strategy
Having large numbers of Groundskeepers in play and buying victory cards can give large numbers of points that can outscore Province buying, comparably to Goons but more restricted.
Example Kingdoms
Where Groundskeeper is strong
Example 1 [images] | ||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Haunted Woods | Lost City | Rabble | Swashbuckler | Border Village | ||||||||||||||||
Hamlet | Fool | Market Square | Port | Groundskeeper | ||||||||||||||||
Landscapes and Additional Cards | ||||||||||||||||||||
Boons | Pathfinding | Academy | ||||||||||||||||||
Groundskeeper is good here because:
- Presence of draw and village allow you to consistently put a large number of Groundskeepers into play
- Ability to gain multiple cards each turn with +buy (Hamlet and Market Square) means that you can both gain multiple Groundskeepers each turn
- The presence of +buy also means that with Groundskeepers in play, you can buy multiple victory cards and score large numbers of points - enough to overcome a large Province deficit
Where Groundskeeper is weak
Example 2 [images] | ||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Butcher | Groundskeeper | Mystic | Venture | Harem | ||||||||||
Ironworks | Gardens | Nomad Camp | Scavenger | Talisman | ||||||||||
Landscapes and Additional Cards | ||||||||||||||
Platinum | Colony | |||||||||||||
Video - this was possibly misplayed as both players missed Combo: Ironworks and Gardens
Groundskeeper is not good here because:
- Lack of draw and strong trashing make getting large numbers of Groundskeeperes into play challenging
- Butcher allows a player who isn't gaining Groundskeeper to quickly drain the Province pile
- Though not played in the example game, the Gardens rush would end the game too fast for enough Groundskeepers to be gained to be an effective source of points
- That said, you may end up buying Groundskeeper when you have 5 coins and do not want to buy a stop card, but this should be infrequent and they are not a focus of the deck

Trivia
Preview
Groundskeeper is pretty basic; all VP cards you gain under her watch come with extra . That applies to both bought and otherwise gained cards, which can sometimes be exciting. They're cumulative; you can play a line of four Groundskeepers, buy an Estate and get +4 .
Secret History
First this cost and let you pay extra when buying a card to get +1 . It was nuts. It shifted to only working on Victory cards and then to costing up front and none later.
