+1 Action Trash a card from your hand. +1 Card per it costs. +2 Cards if it has in its cost. |
Apprentice is an Action card from Alchemy. It is a trash for benefit card, since it trashes one card when you play it and draws you cards based on the trashed card's cost. It is okay for trashing your starting Estates, but poor for trashing Coppers and Curses; it shines when used to strategically trash expensive cards like Gold to get huge hands.

Strategy Article
There is no strategy article for Apprentice.
As a nonterminal trasher, Apprentice is always at least okay for trashing your starting cards even if it gives you no benefit for it; the +2 Cards for trashing Estates can be a consolation. However, it is best when you can find a way to reliably trash expensive cards for huge hands. Good sources of +Buy let you trash an expensive card and use the resulting hand to buy back the expensive card and something else as well; gainers, especially gainers that can gain Gold, are also great sources of Apprentice fodder.
Synergies/Combos
- A Fortress returns to hand after being trashed.
- Rats
- Tunnel, Hoard, Explorer because they can gain Golds for Apprentice to trash.
- Cards with early-game use that can later be trashed:
- Copper-trashers like Moneylender or Spice Merchant
- Cursers that give no benefit like Sea Hag and Familiar
- Gainers like Workshop or Ironworks
