Sentry is a remarkably powerful [[trasher]] and [[sifter]]. Sentry will be your first buy with {{Cost|5}} on most Kingdoms.
When we first saw Sentry, here is how many of us reacted (myself included):

Despite these decreased odds, buying a Sentry on turns 3 or 4 is usually the correct move. One weakness of Sentry is that it cannot trash cards you have in your hand. Convenient ways to discard cards (e.g. {{Card|Forum}}, {{Card|Storeroom}}, {{Card|Oasis}}) can help you trash your remaining {{Card|Copper|Coppers}} and {{Card|Estate|Estates}}, as long as you draw back around to what you discarded. This is only reliable if you are close to drawing your deck. Usually, Sentry’s ability to trash correlates to how conveniently your cards are arranged in your shuffle.
In case you haven’t heard, trashing is very, very good. And Sentry has the ability to [[non-terminal|nonterminally]] trash two cards, without reducing your handsize or buying power the turn you play it. Unlike other trashers such as {{Card|Masquerade}}, {{Card|Upgrade}}, or {{Card|Junk Dealer}} which trash cards from your hand, Sentry trashes cards from the top of your deck (similar to {{Card|Lookout}}).  Sentry’s main advantage over cards like Lookout, Upgrade, and Junk Dealer is its potential to trash two cards instead of one.  In the first few shuffles, your deck is mostly bad cards, giving Sentry’s narrow window of two targets a much greater chance of hitting two {{Card|Copper|Coppers}} or {{Card|Estate|Estates}}.  But as you add more good cards to your deck and move into midgame, Sentry tends to struggle to hit cards you want to trash.  For these reasons, it’s critical to start trashing with Sentry quickly.

In multiplayer, Sentry is overpowered and WitchWitch.jpg is powerful but fine. The big problem with Sentry is that it can trash two cards; if it only let you trash one I'd be a lot happier with it.


I do tend to regret $5's that loom too large as an opening. Sentry is a stand-out case there. If there's ever a 3E (man I hope there isn't), expect me to replace it.
