FAQ

Official FAQ

  • The other players gain their Horses in turn order.
  • They cannot decline to gain one.

Strategy

Bargain, like Banquet and Desperation, can be very useful to gain crucial $5 cards such as Recruiter or Old Witch in the opening. There is often a significant advantage to playing these cards on turn 3 or 4, since trashing and junking have much more of an impact early on when players have smaller decks.

Handing out Horses to your opponents effectively lets them draw a card on a future turn. This is a very powerful effect, especially when Bargaining on your first two turns. However, the drawback is often worth it at this time, even though it helps your opponent’s odds of playing their opening purchases sooner and of hitting important price points -- early $5 cards are so strong.

This trade-off can play more to your advantage when you Bargain immediately after your opponent has shuffled their deck. For example, as second player, buying Bargain on turn 2 lets you see your $5 card one shuffle before the first player sees their Horse.

Bargaining becomes less attractive after the opening, since the relative impact of getting a $5 card into your deck is usually smaller. It is still a way to gain discount $5 cards, though. If the kingdom lacks desirable cards for $4, Bargain can help you build more quickly by making more use of turns on which you only generate $4, at the expense of giving your opponents a Horse. If an opponent is already drawing their deck, the Horse becomes less useful to them.

Finally, Bargain provides extra flexibility when trying to end the game on a pile-out, since it makes $5 cards cost $1 less with no effective downside.

A late Event, stayed just like this. I guess ahead of it I tried another $4 that gained $5's; that one only worked if there was an empty pile.
