At the start of Clean-up, if you have this and no more than one other Action card in play, you may put this onto your deck.

Walled Village is a promotional Action card. It functions as a village, giving +2 Actions; and you can return it to the top of your deck for your next turn if you didn't play many Actions alongside it. The idea is that you can save it until you actually need the +2 Actions that it gives you. In practice, this benefit is usually less helpful than the abilities of other villages of the same cost.

FAQ

Official FAQ

  • When you play this, you draw a card and can play two more Actions this turn.
  • At the start of your Clean-up phase, before discarding anything and before drawing for next turn, if you have a Walled Village in play and no more than two Action cards in play (counting the Walled Village), you may put the Walled Village on top of your deck.
  • If the only cards you have in play are two Walled Villages, you may put either or both of them on top of your deck.
  • Walled Village has to be in play to be put on top of your deck.
  • Walled Village only checks how many Action cards are in play when its ability resolves; Action cards you played earlier this turn but which are no longer in play (such as Feast from Dominion (Base Set)) are not counted, while Action cards still in play from previous turns (duration cards from Dominion: Seaside) are counted, as are Action cards that are in play now but may leave play after resolving Walled Village (such as Treasury from Dominion: Seaside).

Other Rules clarifications

  • Walled Village's ability doesn't care about whether or not it actually helped you avoid terminal collision. If you play Walled Village and two cantrips, you can't top-deck your Walled Village even though you got no real benefit out of it.
  • If you have 3+ Actions in play, but you remove some of them at the start of Clean-up (e.g. by topdecking Alchemist or using Improve), that will let you topdeck your Walled Village.
  • Playing this using a Way, or under the influence of Enchantress, doesn't stop you from top-decking it in Clean-up.

Strategy

Walled Village is a comparatively weak village with a narrowly useful topdecking effect. While in theory this self-topdecking can help ensure you avoid terminal collision, by the time you reach the point of having two terminals in your deck you’ll also likely have more than one Action card to play alongside Walled Village, meaning you rarely even have the option to use its ability as the game goes on. As a result, Walled Village is often skippable if there is any other village at the same price point with a more usable bonus effect, such as Blessed Village. Despite the weak extra effect, Walled Village is a serviceable source of terminal space in Kingdoms lacking stronger options. Like other villages, Walled Village should be added to your deck once you have gained some terminals that might collide, although waiting for better deck control is slightly less important than with other villages since Walled Village can be topdecked each turn if it doesn’t collide with multiple other Actions.

Walled Village’s topdecking can occasionally be relevant in the opening with particular Ways, as if you can play it using the Way on turn 3, you can likely topdeck it and again benefit from the Way on turn 4. Way of the Sheep can allow you to more easily hit $5 twice, without the long-term drawbacks usually associated with opening with Silver. Similarly, Way of the Squirrel, Way of the Otter, or Way of the Owl can be useful to quickly draw through your reshuffle, and Way of the Goat can be an acceptable method of thinning if better alternatives are not available.

Trivia

Official card art.

Card Art

The art shows the medieval village Carcassonne. The expansion symbol is a Carcassonne meeple.

Secret History

This is an outtake from the 7th expansion[notes 2]. I replaced it with an on-theme card. A few people were sad to see it go, but all of the Village slots in the other sets were full, so it was dead.

Then Jay wanted a Carcassonne-related promo card. First I looked at designing a card specifically to fit with Carcassonne, and well Carcassonne does not have a lot of ground in common with Dominion. Then I remembered this card, and it seemed plausible to call it Walled Village. Jay went for it and there it is. These stories can't all be interesting.

Walled Village is an outtake from this set. As a village you can keep around until you need it, it sort of fits in with the coin tokens. I couldn't actually give you something like action tokens because that would have been another kind of token to include. I also couldn't put coin tokens on piles, because Trade Route ate up that space.

Retrospective

Walled Village is too lackluster to be a promo.

Notes

  1. named after the game, which is named after the french city
  2. Guilds had originally been slated to come out before Dark Ages.
