Original article by theory

Part of the reason why I hate multiplayer games.  If you’re sitting in 4th position and the preceding players all bought Cutpurse, well, you’re kinda hosed.  Even 2-player games suffer from Cutpurse, though it’s not quite as bad as Militia (e.g., if both players draw Militia + 4x Copper, player 1 gets a Gold and player 2 gets a crappy 4).
In the opening, Cutpurse can be fine for helping you to afford a card costing 5 or more, and the Attack can have some value in hindering your opponents from doing the same, since they’ll always have Copper in hand and it constitutes a significant component of their payload. However, the fact that Cutpurse only reduces their hand size by one means it’s generally still weaker than a Militia attack, even though the latter doesn’t always discard any of their payload.

It’s also a peculiar card, in that it’s the only non-trashing card I can think of that’s only helpful in the opening.  Of course, if you have the Action, Cutpurse always provides that +2, but in the late game Coppers 1) are probably gone, 2) are probably hard to hit even if they aren’t, and 3) probably don’t matter anyway. Sometimes this isn’t true, if your opponents are playing some sort of weird Copper strategy (most commonly, Gardens or Coppersmith; Moneylender doesn’t really count since they’re trashing all their Coppers anyway), or if it’s an attack-heavy game and every Copper matters, but frankly I’m usually happy to send my Cutpurse to the Chapel after a couple reshuffles.
As your opponents acquire draw and replace their Copper with better cards, Cutpurse does less and less damage. Kingdoms in which it might continue to provide a somewhat effective Attack throughout the game are those in which draw is limited and Copper thinning is lacking, or in which a Copper in an opponent’s starting hand may continue to be useful to them (e.g. with Stables or Silos). Cutpurse can also have some value as a generic source of Action-based payload, for example in draw-to-x decks with plentiful villages; however, since these don’t tend to be scenarios in which the Attack is useful, there’s often a better option.

That having been said, it’s definitely a brutal attack in the early game. Compare it to Militia, one of the best opening 4′s: in the early game, Militia is only superior if you draw no Victory cards.  But even then, Cutpurse is not really all that worse: this ordinarily means a hand of 5 Copper. Militia drops you down to 3, and Cutpurse down to 4.  Either way, the damage is done: it’s cutting you off from the 5 that really hurts. (The rare exception is if you hit a Silver + 4x Copper hand, whereupon Militia gets you down to 4 but Cutpurse only to 5.  But even then, going from 6 to 5 is still much worse than going from 5 to 4.)  And in multiplayer games, as alluded to before, Cutpurse stacks, but Militia doesn’t.
Late in the game, Cutpurse’s Attack component may have some incidental use as a hand inspector. If an opponent has no Copper in hand (as is often likely at this point), playing Cutpurse has no discarding effect but does force them to reveal their hand to you. This is occasionally helpful in an endgame situation in which you can make good use of the information: for instance, your play may be influenced by the presence or absence of a Reaction such as Black Cat in an opponent’s hand or the knowledge that they’re about to have a dud turn. Very rarely, it could even be tactically worthwhile to gain-and-play a Cutpurse for this purpose.

(One can only imagine how ridiculously brutal Cutpurse used to be, when it read “+2; name a Treasure card; each other player discards it.”)

In other words, Cutpurse is probably one of the best early game attacks, along with Sea Hag, Militia, and Ambassador. If you’re feeling especially vindictive, an early second copy of Cutpurse can work wonders.

Finally, when paired with Chapel (or similar early trasher), Cutpurse works similarly to a Militia/Chapel opening, in that it is a good way to boost yourself up while hurting your opponent’s trashing.  As if first player didn’t already have enough reasons to celebrate Cutpurse being in the set.

Each other player discards a Copper (or reveals a hand with no Copper).

Cutpurse is an Action-Attack card from Seaside. It is a terminal silver and also makes other players discard Coppers. It is somewhat similar to Militia in the early game, but stacks differently in that multiple Cutpurses can make you discard many Coppers making Cutpurse particularly strong in multiplayer.

Official FAQ

 • Each of your opponents with no Coppers in hand reveals their hand to prove this.

Strategy

Cutpurse is a terminal silver whose discarding Attack is often insufficiently impactful to make the card worthwhile. Like many other terminal silvers, it suffers from opportunity cost problems, as there are often better cards competing both at the $4 price point and for your terminal space.

In the opening, Cutpurse can be fine for helping you to afford a card costing $5 or more, and the Attack can have some value in hindering your opponents from doing the same, since they’ll always have Copper in hand and it constitutes a significant component of their payload. However, the fact that Cutpurse only reduces their hand size by one means it’s generally still weaker than a Militia attack, even though the latter doesn’t always discard any of their payload.

As your opponents acquire draw and replace their Coppers with better cards, Cutpurse does less and less damage.

Late in the game, Cutpurse’s Attack component may have some incidental use as a hand inspector. If an opponent has no Coppers in hand (as is often likely at this point), playing Cutpurse has no discarding effect but does force them to reveal their hand to you.

Secret History

This started out as "Cards cost $1 less this turn, then $1 more until your next turn." That doesn't have the same timing as the other duration cards - it goes away at the end of the previous player's turn, rather than at the end of your turn. The developers didn't like that. I replaced it with "+$2, name a treasure card, each other player discards it." That was quite strong. You don't have to discard Gold very many times before you're sick of it. I reined it in by having it only hit Copper. It's still quite annoying if multiples get played against you early on.
