Warrior is an Action-Attack-Traveller card from Adventures. It is the upgrade from Treasure Hunter. It discards cards from the top of other players' decks, and trashes them if they cost $3 or $4. The number of cards affected is equal to the number of Traveller cards you have in play. It is not in the Supply, but can be exchanged for using a Treasure Hunter. Warrior itself, once discarded from play, can be exchanged for a Hero. There are only 5 copies of Warrior in the Warrior pile.

Warrior is the third step in its line of Travellers: Page - Treasure Hunter - Warrior - Hero - Champion.

FAQ

Official FAQ

  • Each player, in turn order, discards the appropriate number of cards from the top of their deck, trashing the ones costing $3 or $4.
  • If Warrior is your only Traveller in play, each other player will only discard and potentially trash one card.
  • If you for example have a Peasant, a Fugitive, and the Warrior in play, each other player would discard and potentially trash three cards.
  • Cards are only trashed if they cost exactly $3 or exactly $4.
  • Cards with P in the cost (from Alchemy) do not cost exactly $3 or $4.
  • Cards with an asterisk in the cost (such as Warrior) or + in the cost (such as Masterpiece from Guilds) may be trashed by Warrior (if costing $3 or $4).
  • Champion and Teacher are not Travellers.

Other rules clarifications

  • Warrior discards cards one at a time.
  • Instead of revealing the top card of their deck (like Giant), they instantly discard it. This means that they can't get a Coffers from Patron), but it does mean that they can play a Village Green and have it not be trashed.
  • If another player discards a Tunnel, they can reveal it to gain a Gold, but they will still trash the Tunnel.

Strategy

To better understand the Kingdoms and contexts in which Warrior appears, it may be useful to refer to the overall strategy section for this Traveller line.

Warrior combines terminal draw with a trashing attack whose impact is often relatively small due to two factors:

  1. There is usually only a small window of opportunity before your opponent gets attack immunity via Champion.
  2. Warrior's attack will often only reveal a single card, making it that much less likely to find a useful card.

In many cases, Warrior will either reveal a card outside of its price range (thus providing free cycling for your opponent) or hit an unimportant card such as Silver. However, Warrior does have the potential to disrupt an opponent's Traveller progression. Notably, Warrior can trash both Treasure Hunter and other Warriors: while on average this is fairly unlikely to happen, when it does it can be a major setback to your opponent's Traveller advancement, which in turn can play a significant role in deciding the game, particularly if they have only advanced one Page or if thinning and cycling are very difficult. Higher-tier Travellers are too expensive to be trashed, but discarding one of these can also be highly detrimental: in particular, the impact of delaying your opponent’s Champion can be significant. For these reasons, playing your Warrior as early as possible is usually very desirable, both to increase your chances of trashing an opponent's Traveller and to reduce the chances that your own Travellers will be trashed.

While in most cases Champion’s attack immunity puts a time limit on Warrior's effectiveness as a general-purpose trashing attack, Warrior's attack can be made more impactful in the following ways:

  • The attack becomes better the more Travellers you have in play, so whenever possible, Warrior should be played after other Travellers you have in hand. In this context, extra Pages can be useful if acquiring them has a low opportunity cost.
  • Cost reduction reducing prices by $1 or $2 enables you to trash more valuable cards, including more advanced Travellers.

Beyond its attack, the fact that Warrior offers a small amount of terminal draw can make it relevant later in the game, once you have Champion in play. Depending on the availability of other draw, it might be reasonable to buy and advance additional Pages for this purpose. However, since doing so requires playing Treasure Hunter, this will only add net draw to your deck if you have a way to handle or avoid any Silvers it gains. Combined with the fact that Warrior draws only two cards (equivalent to Moat) and that acquiring it takes multiple turns, there are often better options for draw.

Secret History

Soldier briefly was a mix of Militia and Ghost Ship; then Soldier and Warrior handed out the -1 Card and -$1 tokens respectively. Later on I had two other attacks using those and decided it would be more fun if these cards did something else. So Soldier is a Militia variant with variable money and Warrior is a Knight variant with variable attack depth.

Retrospective

I can understand complaining about how demoralizing it is to lose your Warrior to someone else's Warrior. It was not overlooked, it was discussed, it was a real concern. In the end most playtesters did not mind it and as you know I let it happen. Get more than one Page, that's my advice. Get cards that cycle through your deck faster, like Dungeon; Warrior can't kill your Hero, although it also hurts to not get to upgrade that shuffle. You may wish to avoid playing with Knights and Page/Peasant in the same game; every Knight attack is so terrifying.
