It's not {{Cost|2}} because {{Cost|6}} gives us more gameplay. It's not {{Cost|8}} because the gameplay there is bad. Shaman is an Action card from Plunder. It is a trasher, but its mere presence in a game also means players are constantly gaining from the Trash. So in a game with Shaman, trashers (including Shaman) in effect become delayed-action junking attacks. Meanwhile, trash-for-benefit effects such as remodelers get more risky, since if you trash a good card for a strong benefit, your opponents might just gain the card you trashed on their next turn!

FAQ
Official FAQ
- In games using Shaman, for the whole game, at the start of each of your turns (including extra turns), you gain a card from the trash costing up to . This is mandatory.
- If there's no such card, you don't gain one.
- This applies even on your first turn (relevant with Necromancer, from Nocturne).
- It applies even if no-one ever gets a Shaman.
- The gained card goes into your discard pile. It's a card you gained, and can trigger things that care about that; for example gaining a Treasure would trigger Secluded Shrine's ability.

Shaman is the inverse Cathedral. This game, the junk will keep coming; you will have to figure out something there.
Cost limit
When asked why the cards Shaman gains from the trash have a maximum cost of , Donald X. answered:
It's not because gives us more gameplay. It's not because the gameplay there is bad. I never tried those specific versions; I had experience from other cards.
If you trash a good card to Shaman, your opponent (or, the one to your left) can get it; we always enjoyed that. It's no accident.
It's possible it could have been allowed to [gain] trash[ed] Provinces; since I didn't test that, I don't know. But it sounds bad.
