Goatherd is an Action card from . It is a non-terminal trasher that can also provide non-terminal draw based on how many cards the player to your right trashed on their last turn.

- You draw cards even if you did not trash a card.
- One way to keep count of the number of cards trashed is to put them on the trash sideways.
 Other Rules clarifications
- You get +1 Card for every time the player to your right trashed a card during their last turn, even when they trash a card they already trashed that turn. For example, if they trashed the same twice, your Goatherds will give you +2 Cards.

I tried to make an interactive trasher
that cared about the trash
. At first it counted copies of itself in the trash, to determine how many times you could trash a card or gain a . Then it counted Actions
in the trash, and divided the count by 2. A bunch of versions followed, trying to zero in on the good parts of the card. Some versions gained a card that varied in cost with the trash; at first it could get . Some had a threshold rather than scaling with the trash. And well then I tried to think of what other way a trasher could be interactive, and came up with Goatherd and hooray, it was better. At first it counted all trashes, then it shifted to only ones you personally trashed, at Matt's suggestion.
 Relevant outtakes
One of the very old cards I dredged up was "Trash a card from your hand, discard a card, +3 Cards." It holds the distinction of being the first card in the oldest Dominion file, though I know it replaced something; I wasn't saving every image back then. In its day it was fine but then seemed redundant. I brought it back with exiling, and we tried it with the +3 Cards first and last, and then versions to try to iron out things I didn't like about it. I was never happy with it and then did a different trasher, which got me to Goatherd in the end.

Donald X. was asked if Goatherd was a good fit for , because it has more exiling than trashing.
No Goatherd seemed fine. I guess if I'd been staring at a bunch of good options I might have saved Goatherd for a later set. But Goatherd triggers off of itself, and well, a lot of games that's all it would ever get, whatever set it was in; you just don't deal out another trasher for that game. That part of Goatherd had to be compelling enough with just Goatherd and if it was then it's not so bad if the rest of the set doesn't push it.
Donald X. was also asked if Goatherd could have avoided counting the number of cards trashed by being a Duration (like ).
It's nice to not have the tracking on Goatherd; that wasn't a secret when Goatherd was worked on and it got the version with the tracking. But maybe there's a better version of it ala .
