Gold is the most valuable of the three basic Treasure cards included in all games of Dominion. It provides when played. Gold is one of the main stopping points on the way to buying Provinces; maintaining a fairly high density of Gold in one's deck makes buying Provinces regularly relatively easy. Gold is the most important card in many Big Money strategies, and often plays an important role in engines as well—especially engines that make use of Action cards for +Cards and +Buy but not for +. Each standalone set comes with 30 Gold cards, and therefore a typical game begins with 30 Golds in the supply; this pile rarely empties.

Cards that interact with Gold
Since Gold is a basic card, several other cards specifically name and interact with it. Typically such Kingdom cards give alternative ways of gaining Gold; but since Gold is quite valuable, these alternative modes of gaining it can be expensive or difficult to set up, or come with other penalties of their own. A few, such as Legionary and Encampment, reward you for having Gold in your hand.
