FAQ
Official FAQ
- This just changes how much money you get when playing Copper.
- The effect is cumulative; if you use Throne Room on Coppersmith, each Copper that you play that turn will produce .
Other Rules clarifications
The bonus value does not apply retroactively to Coppers in play before playing the Coppersmith (via Black Market or Storyteller).
Strategy
Coppersmith was an extremely weak terminal payload card. There are two fundamental problems with Coppersmith:
- Because its value scales with the number of Coppers you play, you need both a significant number of Coppers in your deck and strong enough draw to draw them all. These factors are very often contradictory, as it is more difficult to find and play your draw cards when you have a large amount of junk. Usually, in the process of building a functional deck, you’ll want to add non-Copper cards to your deck and thin your Coppers to get deck control, both of which reduce the number of Coppers you can expect to collide with Coppersmith.
- Even with very strong and reliable sources of draw (e.g. Wharf), Coppersmith is often still inefficient in terms of terminal space and payload per stop card relative to other alternatives. For example, playing a Coppersmith and three Coppers only generates for four stop cards; you can generate the same amount, and without using up terminal space, with only three stop cards in the form of Silvers.
This combination of awkward deck construction and low payoff make Coppersmith difficult to use later in the game, but even early in the game when your deck consists mostly of Coppers, adding a Coppersmith to your deck is usually only equivalent to adding a terminal silver or terminal Gold that will quickly fall off in effectiveness.
Coppersmith might occasionally be usable if you have sufficient draw and some other reason to have Coppers in your deck. This might be due to a Kingdom with no way to thin Coppers, or the use of Apothecary in combination with a sifter for draw.
