- If there are fewer than 3 Golds in the pile, just gain the remaining Golds.
[edit] Strategy
Windfall gains three Golds for just , which is cheaper than the cost of a single Gold. However, you can only achieve this effect if both your deck and your discard pile are empty. This means that in order to buy Windfall you need to be drawing your whole deck. Windfall is typically used to add payload quickly to an engine. Usually this is best when you have the overdraw and +Buy or trash-for-benefit to make use of the added Golds.
The best way to be able to buy Windfall is by trashing your starting cards aggressively (in fact, Donate–Windfall can be a strategy unto itself). Once you have trashed most of your starting cards, you will easily be able to draw your deck every turn but will not have much buying power. Thus, buying Windfall here gives you three Golds when you would want them the most. Once you have gained the three Golds, you can either go straight into buying Provinces, or you can build your deck into something even more powerful, depending on what the rest of the Kingdom offers.
