FAQ
Official FAQ
- First draw a card and get +1 Action; then choose a card from your hand and set it aside face down under Haven.
- You may look at it, but other players may not.
- You have to set aside a card if you can.
- At the start of your next turn, return the set aside card to your hand.
Other Rules clarifications
- If you have no card in your hand to set aside when you play Haven, you set aside nothing, and clean up Haven at the end of that turn; it does not stay out.
- If Haven is still in play when the game ends, it and the card set aside with it are returned to your deck before scoring; this can matter for alt-VP cards like Gardens.
Strategy
Haven is a cheap non-terminal Duration card that can lend some extra reliability to your deck or facilitate helpful collisions by saving a card for your next turn. Since you have to set aside a card, meaning that your hand size is reduced rather than maintained, Haven is not best thought of as truly a cantrip and may therefore require extra draw, especially if you want to play multiple copies per turn. However, a couple of copies can be worthwhile, especially if their opportunity cost is low, i.e. if you have and a Buy to spare and there is no competition from stronger cards, such as Border Guard, at this price point. Haven’s best use case is usually to set aside some engine component that will help to kickstart your turn (e.g. a draw card or village, or a preferred target for a start-of-turn effect like that of Mastermind or Transmogrify). This is a particularly cost-effective reliability boost if you have overdraw and can reliably set aside engine components you do not currently need in order to guarantee drawing next turn.
When you do not you have deck control, Haven can also be useful to mitigate terminal collisions and smooth out your payload between turns (this usually applies to generation, but can be helpful when you’re trying to afford a card that includes in its cost). It can also be useful in this scenario to help with colliding cards that you need in hand at the same time, such as Province with a Tournament or a trash-for-benefit card with one you would like to trash.
In any deck, particularly during the endgame when you are drawing your entire deck, Haven can also play a useful if minor role as a pseudo-thinner of cards you cannot or don’t want to trash. Although using it in this way doesn’t benefit your next turn as much, setting aside a card that is of no use to have in hand (most often a Victory card) allows Haven to behave more like a true cantrip, and you may also be able to keep that card out of the reshuffle.

† The line separating start-of-turn abilities is unwarranted and was removed in later print runs. This matters e.g. when you are Enchanted or you use a Way.
