Strategy Article
+
There isn't a Salvager strategy article.
+

Salvager fills three functions at once: trashing, +Buy, and generation of coin. The +Buy is strongest when you have a lot of coin, which is most likely to happen if you trash high-cost cards with Salvager. The card is very weak when used to trash copper or curses, and only slightly stronger when used to trash estates. Its true value only comes out when used to trash more costly cards.
+
Strategy
 +
Salvager is a trash for benefit card that also provides +Buy. Salvager often sees use as a Estate thinner in the early game. Because it generates 2 while doing so, opening with Salvager can allow you to still hit early price points while removing the worst cards in your starting deck. However, as a terminal that provides very little benefit while trashing Copper, it is generally less useful if you fail to collide it with your Estate, and is much less useful after you run out of Estate. As such, you will usually not get much value out of additional copies, and Salvager is likely skippable if stronger trashers that can deal with Copper (e.g. Steward) are available, or if you need to prioritize the terminal space for something else (e.g. advancing your Peasant).

A prime candidate for Salvager's trashing are cards which outlive their usefulness: Cursers after the curses run out, Moneylender after you have trashed your copper, or Ill-Gotten Gains after it has been bought.  Peddler has an obvious synergy with Salvager: you can buy a lot of Peddlers cheaply, and then use Salvager to trade in each one for a Province.
+
While the extra Buy can sometimes be important in the early game to gain cheap engine pieces, it will generally increase in relevance later as you start to have better Cost generation. In the endgame, the extra Buy offers extra flexibility especially with the potential spike in Cost from trashing something. Notably, Salvager can mill Province; trashing a Province provides both the Cost and the Buy necessary to get a new copy.

Salvager can be a powerhouse in deck-drawing engines able to gain high-cost cards. Rats provides faster trashing as well as moderate-cost fuel for Salvager, and gainers like Ironworks can also provide 4-cost cards. Haggler and Border Village can also result in a high concentration of expendable high-cost cardsFortress can also be repeatedly trashed by Salvager while sending Fortress back into your hand, effectively turning Salvager into +4 with +1 Buy, an extraordinary deal for an Action only costing 4.
+
Like many other trash-for-benefit cards, Salvager synergizes with effects that can provide you with expensive fodder. If the source can do so consistently (e.g. Fortress or a Gold gainer like Bandit), Salvager may be able to generate money and Buys sustainably. Other sources may be less sustainable, but still useful. This may include cards with on-trash effects (e.g. Rats), Peddler you bought cheaply, cards with on-gain effects that provide minimal benefit after gaining (for example, Cemetery), or Actions you no longer need (such as a curser after the Curse pile empties).

Early in the game, Salvager is best for trashing Estate for +2, and is weak for trashing copper, although trashing the copper is usually worthwhile on a bad draw. On some boards, the early +Buy can be useful or even decisive, such as in the case of Fool's Gold.

Salvager has a lot of late-game utility. Even without strong synergies, it can be used to trash expensive cards like Gold to get you that last bit of cash you need for the Province or Colony, or perhaps ending with a double buy. Also, using Salvager to trash a Province for +8 or Colony for +11 allows you to buy another copy of it. This strategy is particularly effective with Fool's Gold as this card produces a quick rush on provinces but often chokes on victory cardsThis can be used to speedily end of the game. Deciding when to start trashing your good cards is a critical strategic decision.

Salvager is an Action card from Seaside. Salvager is a trash for benefit card that allows you to trash one card from your hand and get +$ equal to its cost to spend this turn; it even gives you +Buy to use the $ it gives you. It's often useful as an EstateEstate.jpg trasher in the early game, but It's not as good for trashing cheap cards like CopperCopper.jpg or CurseCurse.jpg, since it gives you +$0.

 • For example if you trash an EstateEstate.jpg, which costs $2, you get +$2 (and +1 Buy).
 • If you trash a card with P or D in the cost (from other expansions), you get nothing for those symbols.

[edit] Strategy

Salvager is a trash for benefit card that also provides +Buy. Salvager often sees use as a EstateEstate.jpg thinner in the early game. Because it generates $2 while doing so, opening with Salvager can allow you to still hit early price points while removing the worst cards in your starting deck. However, as a terminal that provides very little benefit while trashing CoppersCopper.jpg, it is generally less useful if you fail to collide it with your EstatesEstate.jpg, and is much less useful after you run out of EstatesEstate.jpg. As such, you will usually not get much value out of additional copies, and Salvager is likely skippable if stronger trashers that can deal with CoppersCopper.jpg (e.g. StewardSteward.jpg) are available, or if you need to prioritize the terminal space for something else (e.g. advancing your PeasantPeasant.jpg).

While the extra Buy can sometimes be important in the early game to gain cheap engine pieces, it will generally increase in relevance later as you start to have better $ generation. In the endgame, the extra Buy offers extra flexibility especially with the potential spike in $ from trashing something. Notably, Salvager can mill ProvincesProvince.jpg; trashing a ProvinceProvince.jpg provides both the $ and the Buy necessary to get a new copy.

Like many other trash-for-benefit cards, Salvager synergizes with effects that can provide you with expensive fodder. If the source can do so consistently (e.g. FortressFortress.jpg or a GoldGold.jpg gainer like BanditBandit.jpg), Salvager may be able to generate money and Buys sustainably. Other sources may be less sustainable, but still useful. This may include cards with on-trash effects (e.g. RatsRats.jpg), PeddlersPeddler.jpg you bought cheaply, cards with on-gain effects that provide minimal benefit after gaining (for example, CemeteryCemetery.jpg), or Actions you no longer need (such as a curser after the CurseCurse.jpg pile empties).
