This is always worse than bishop. the second difference is is that it is quicker in trashing. that is most of the time why you buy it. it might not be as quick as chapel as it on average only trashes 2 cards., but it gives points while doing so. that likely is not going to matter during the early game, but in the endgame, you'll be glad you trashed with temple. Sometimes during the greening, there might be so much vp tokens on the temple pile that it may be worth more than a province. that makes it crucial to get it before your opponent does, which brings us to our last point: anticipating when to buy temple purely for it's when gain effect. you might want to do this during the midgame, as you can always trash it together with a copper and estate, but there is significant opportunity cost when doing so. Usually, the correct move is to buy it just before the greening for it's when gain effect (you get it's points and then trash estates while maintaining the same number of points). finally, special notes go to the ruins and shelters which are diverse junk, which means temple will trash more. | |

[edit] Official FAQ
- You get +1 , trash 1, 2, or 3 cards with different names from your hand (for example a Copper and an Estate, but not two Coppers), then add 1 (from the supply) to the Temple pile.
- Gaining a Temple (whether buying it or otherwise) gives you all the that has accumulated on the pile.
- The pile gets even if it is empty; this only matters if there is a way to return a Temple to the pile (like Ambassador from Dominion: Seaside) or a way to gain one from the trash (like Graverobber from Dominion: Dark Ages).
[edit] Strategy
Temple's closest cousin is Bishop. both give victory points, both give trashing, and both have some small thing that makes them unique. the two main things that make temple different from bishop is that temple provides a fixed number of victory points. Since temple is typically a slow trasher, you generally want to add a second one. Usually, the correct move is to buy it just before the greening for it's when gain effect (you get it's points and then trash estates while maintaining the same number of points). finally, special notes go to the ruins and shelters which are diverse junk, which means temple will trash more.
conclusion
if you are looking just for trashing, better options are usually available, but the vp chips make it a worthwhile investment.
