University is an Action card from Alchemy. It is a gainer which lets you gain Action cards costing up to 5 without buying them. Its P cost makes it fairly slow, since it takes one shuffle to buy the Potion, a second shuffle to buy the University, a third shuffle to play the University, and finally a fourth shuffle to play the cool Action card you gained; however, in a long game, repeatedly buying and playing Universities can lead to a huge number of Action cards in your deck.

University is an odd card. It functions somewhat like a combination of a Village and a gainer like Workshop.  Its ability to gain 5-cost cards is a major advantage, as these cards are considerably stronger than 4 cost cards. However, it can only gain actions, which makes it poorly suited to VP-rush strategies. It is a card built for engines and generally has no place in a big money strategy.
+
Strategy
 +
University is both a gainer for Action cards and a village. This combination makes it a non-terminal gainer with which you can build an engine fairly quickly, without any concern that your Universities might collide. Additionally, University's relatively high cost limit of 5 allows you to gain much more powerful cards than you can with Workshop variants. University’s main downsides are that it is a P card, and that it and Potion are both stop cards. The former means that acquiring Universities is a slow process, bottlenecked by buying and drawing a Potion. The latter greatly increases your need for draw. As a result, the most important targets for University are usually draw cards, and because it is a village, these draw cards can be strong terminal draw such as Wharf. If draw cards costing 5 or less are absent, University may be less viable.

University may look like a quick way to get 5 actions, but it is not.  It takes too many shuffles (buy Potion, buy University, gain Action, play the Action) and usually buying the action is faster. However, University engines can make up for the slow start by having absolutely crushing numbers of actions by the end of the game. Don't go for University if there's just one key action that you want, make sure that you are willing to get lots and lots of different Actions, and make sure the game will go on long enough for you to use them all.
+
Assuming University is relevant in a given Kingdom, the most common question is when to gain the Potion. Most of the time opening with it is appealing, as you’re fairly likely to be able to afford a University on turn 3 or 4, and play it on turn 5 or 6. At this point, it’s probably best to gain Action cards which help you further establish deck control, usually in the form of draw. Occasionally, it may be worth delaying the Potion if there are other more urgent priorities.  For example, when spiking for Inheritance the Potion is an active detriment. Alternatively, if your goal is to play an Attack such as Witch as soon and frequently as possible, gaining it via University may take too long, and the additional stop cards will slow down your cycling.

University is usually not suitable for use as a sole source of +Actions. The main reason is that you cannot usually buy enough of them quickly enough to set up an engine.  If, on the other hand, there are other Villages on the board, you can either buy them or use University to gain them fast enough to get a strong engine going.  Because University does not draw cards, it is also important to get card draw, in more volume and faster than you normally would want in an engine constructed around typical Villages. University is almost tailor-made for draw-up-to-X cards like Library and Watchtower, especially when there are other disappearing actions like Festival on the board.
+
Once you have good deck control, University can also be used to gain strong payload cards such as Bridge Troll. As these are often terminal stop cards, it may be necessary to keep adding draw and even additional villages. The P cost of University puts a hard limit on how quickly you can gain more copies (usually a maximum of one per turn), and you may not be able to gain enough draw to support indefinitely many copies in any case. However, since multiple Universities can gain terminals faster than you can or want to buy more Universities, you might need to supplement your Universities, preferably with hand size neutral villages. Although University can't gain most Victory cards and thus may be less relevant during the greening stage of the game, scoring with Distant Lands or Island can be an attractive option, especially if you can gain-and-play them.

5-cost cards that you want a lot of in your deck, like Market, Highway, or Bazaar make University stronger.  Highway is particularly useful as it synergizes with the sort of mega-turns that a University-based engine can produce, and it also enables the gaining of higher-cost cards like Grand Market or King's Court. A source of virtual coin is important.  Conspirator and Bridge are also good cards to see on the board. In the absence of virtual coin, buying some high-cost treasure can be warranted, but it is usually best to rely on cantrip virtual coin that can be gained in quantity without slowing down the deck.  It is typically very easy to snatch up Peddler once you get a University engine going too.
+
In the end-game, University provides significant pile control, substantially increasing the likelihood of a pileout. While engines often stop gaining expensive Action cards during greening, University can continue to add these to your deck until the end of the game. Cantrips may become attractive targets once the key piles (i.e. draw and payload) are empty or low, at which point a pileout is usually imminent and tracking the number of gains available to your opponent is important in deciding how much you can lower the piles and whether you need to score during your turn. Although it is sometimes low at this point, the University pile itself is relatively unlikely to feature in a pileout, in contrast to many gainers. This is because it cannot be used to gain copies of itself, and each player is usually capped at buying one per turn unless they have the means to gain-and-play a second Potion.

Games where more than one player is going for a University-based engine often end on piles.  Make sure to grab VP early enough to prevent a sudden win. You can also use this strategy: if it looks like your opponent is getting a more powerful engine going than yours, try to grab a narrow lead and end the game on the same turn.

The presence of cursing attacks on the board often make University weaker, especially when the curses cannot be blocked.  In these games, winning the cursing race is very important; buying University often comes at the cost of buying a Curser in the first few rounds, and gives you a disadvantage in dealing curses.  A University deck can be slower to get started, and is likely to choke on curses.

[edit] Strategy

University is both a gainer for Action cards and a village. This combination makes it a non-terminal gainer with which you can build an engine fairly quickly, without any concern that your Universities might collide. Additionally, University's relatively high cost limit of $5 allows you to gain much more powerful cards than you can with Workshop variants. University’s main downsides are that it is a P card, and that it and PotionPotion.jpg are both stop cards. The former means that acquiring Universities is a slow process, bottlenecked by buying and drawing a PotionPotion.jpg. The latter greatly increases your need for draw. As a result, the most important targets for University are usually draw cards, and because it is a village, these draw cards can be strong terminal draw such as WharfWharf.jpg. If draw cards costing $5 or less are absent, University may be less viable.

Assuming University is relevant in a given Kingdom, the most common question is when to gain the PotionPotion.jpg. Most of the time opening with it is appealing, as you’re fairly likely to be able to afford a University on turn 3 or 4, and play it on turn 5 or 6. At this point, it’s probably best to gain Action cards which help you further establish deck control, usually in the form of draw. Occasionally, it may be worth delaying the PotionPotion.jpg if there are other more urgent priorities. For example, when spiking for InheritanceInheritance.jpg the PotionPotion.jpg is an active detriment. Alternatively, if your goal is to play an Attack such as WitchWitch.jpg as soon and frequently as possible, gaining it via University may take too long, and the additional stop cards will slow down your cycling.

Once you have good deck control, University can also be used to gain strong payload cards such as Bridge TrollBridge Troll.jpg. Although University can't gain most Victory cards and thus may be less relevant during the greening stage of the game, scoring with Distant LandsDistant Lands.jpg or IslandIsland.jpg can be an attractive option, especially if you can gain-and-play them.

This is because it cannot be used to gain copies of itself, and each player is usually capped at buying one per turn unless they have the means to gain-and-play a second PotionPotion.jpg.
