[edit] Strategy
Marauder is a weak junking attack which, like all junkers, is at its best when there is no or very weak thinning. The beneficial effect to your deck is generally weak, as you have to wait an additional shuffle before you get to play the Spoils, which is a one-shot stop card. Marauder is best avoided when getting rid of the Ruins is relatively easy. The fact that Ruins, unlike Curses, do not give –1 means that Marauder is skippable more often than most Cursers even when there is no way to trash its junk.
Marauder is most useful when, despite the lack of trashing, the Kingdom incentivizes engine building, usually with strong draw and payload. Giving your opponent more junk to draw through in addition to their ten starting cards means they will need to add lots of draw or sifting cards to get to the cards they want.
It’s important to remember that Ruins are Action cards, so, to give a couple of examples, Wandering Minstrel makes Marauder more attractive, while City Quarter and various Ways make Marauder less attractive. Some less obvious interactions include trash-for-benefit effects that specifically target Action cards, such as those of Necromancer and Advance.
One niche use of Marauder is to ‘fish’ for Ruined Market on boards with no other +Buy. The idea is that if you reveal a Ruined Market as the next card in the Ruins pile after playing Marauder, you have the first chance to gain it. For this to be a good idea, +Buy must be extremely valuable.
