+1 Card +1 Action + During a player's Buy phase, this costs less per Action card they have in play. |
Peddler is a cantrip from Prosperity costing that gets cheaper to buy per Action card in play. Under normal circumstances, one would not purchase this card for more than about , based on its usefulness relative to other cards in your deck. This card then works well with non-terminal Actions and +Buy, which together can allow multiple copies of Peddler to be bought for free. During the Action phase of a turn, Peddler's cost is always , which allows trash-for-benefit cards to get proportionally more value out of it than you spent to buy it.
Other cantrips that provide + are often referred to as Peddler variants.

FAQ
Official FAQ
- Most of the time, this costs .
- During your Buy phase, this costs less per Action card you have in play.
- This cost applies to all Peddler cards, including ones in hands and decks.
- It never costs less than .
- If you play King's Court on Worker's Village, for example, that is just two Action cards you have in play, even though you played the Worker's Village three times.
- Buying cards using the promotional card Black Market is something that does not happen during a Buy phase, so Peddler still costs then.
Other Rules clarifications
- During your Buy phase, if you get more Action cards into your play area (with e.g. Toil), Peddler's cost will be further reduced. And if any Action cards leave your play area (e.g. you Scepter a card and play it as Way of the Butterfly), Peddler's cost will increase.
- Crown is an Action card, even if you play it as a Treasure in the Buy phase, and so playing it in the Buy phase affects Peddler's cost.
- When an Action is played during the Buy phase, Peddler's cost changes as soon as the new card enters your play area. So if you have 1 Action in play and then play a Workshop (with e.g. Toil), Peddler now costs , and can be gained by Workshop's effect.
- Unlike Destrier, this changes cost only during your Buy phase. So if you return to your Action phase (with e.g. Villa or Cavalry), or enter your Night and/or Clean-up phase, Peddler will return to its normal cost of .

Without the variable pricing, Peddler should probably be priced at , as a Market without the +Buy. With the variable pricing, it’s a steal at or , and you should try to set up a deck with spammable non-terminal Actions to take advantage of it (e.g., Caravan, Spy, Treasury). Peddlers themselves are also good ways to get more Peddlers.
But Peddlers are best if you can get them down to and then use them to soak up extra Buys. For example, the easiest way to grab Peddlers is with Worker's Villages, which provide free Actions as well as ample +Buy. Past 4, each Worker's Village represents an additional free Peddler. Markets can also work, though those are harder to get, as well as Pawns, which are not as effective.
The biggest problem, in fact, is that after a certain point cheapness doesn’t matter any more. When you’re regularly pulling in – per turn, buying Peddlers is a bit of a waste without +Buy.
Peddler’s variable pricing also makes it work extremely well with cards that depend on its cost. You can:
- Remodel or Forge it into a Province;
- Upgrade or Remake it to a Platinum;
- Expand it to a Colony;
- Bishop it for 5 ;
- Apprentice it for +8 cards;
- Salvage it for +.
It also defends against Swindlers extremely well, since once you run out the Peddler pile, an opponent’s Swindler becomes very dangerous to play for fear of turning your Peddlers into Provinces. Peddler is also one of the few cards that defends against Smugglers, since it’s cheap to buy but un-Smuggleable; it's also safe from the attacks of Rogue and Knights
Synergies/Combos
- Worker's Villages/Markets/non-terminal +Buy
- Cantrips
- Trash-for-benefit cards that depend on other cards’ cost (e.g., Remodel, Forge, Apprentice, Salvager)
- Opponents’ Swindlers
- Opponents’ Smugglers, Rogues, and Knights
- Travelling Fair since if you have sufficient cards and money out, spend all your money on Travelling Fairs and then soak up all the Peddlers
- Stonemason assists with both gaining peddlers (remember that you can not overpay ), and gaining cards costing or less.
- Exorcist can get Ghost from Peddler
Antisynergies
- Lack of +Buy
- Lack of non-terminal Actions
