The discussion topic for Cemetery (and its Heirloom, Haunted Mirror) can be found here.
+
Cemetery is an on-gain trasher and a supplementary source of alt-VP. Its most powerful use case occurs when you can gain it early in the game while still having a hand full of multiple junk cards to trash. Its presence also guarantees that you have at least one way to trash its Heirloom, Haunted Mirror, in order to gain a Ghost, although the value of going out of your way to achieve this is variable.

Cemetery is a trasher that works upon gaining instead of being able to play it, which is an interesting twist. You'll have to make sure that you have plenty of cards in hand to trash before you gain it. The most straightforward way is to use a gainer such as Workshop, but you might also just go for a big handsize with, for example, Laboratory and then buy a Cemetery when you have a sufficient amount of junk cards in hand.
+
Several trashers are easier and faster to use than Cemetery in most cases (e.g. Chapel), so Cemetery tends to be of minor importance if such a card is available. Since trashing with Cemetery involves gaining what amounts to a junk card, at least in the early game, it's usually only worthwhile as thinning if you can trash three or four cards. This means that, in order to use Cemetery effectively, you need to gain it while still having a large number of targets in hand. One way to achieve this is with strong draw, although this may be difficult early in the game when trashing is a top priority, since Copper are still your main source of payload; ways to spike either hand size (e.g. Gear) or Cost (e.g. Bounty Hunter) may be helpful. An often preferable alternative is to avoid the need for an increased hand size by using a gainer to obtain the Cemetery; Workshop variants tend to be best for this, as they can be acquired in the opening. Gainers that can gain cards to hand such as Cobbler and Sculptor can be particularly useful as you can also trash the Cemetery alongside your starting junk. Finally, Alms synergizes well with Cemetery, as it allows you to gain the card with nothing in play at all, thereby providing a Chapel-like effect as early in the game as you want it, including in the opening.

So what is considered a sufficient amount of junk cards? This question was answered by user Awaclus in the following way:
+
A Cemetery gained early in the game is often a useful trash-for-benefit target later: for example, Upgrade or Transmogrify can turn it into a strong Action card costing 5. Later on, it can offer a reasonable source of alt-VP as an intermediate option between Estate and Duchy—in the endgame, it is therefore once again a good target for Workshop variants, especially if you’ve picked up additional junk to trash, e.g. Curse.

A good basic rule of thumb is at least EE or ECC or CCCC where E=Estate or other junk card that doesn't do anything and C=Copper or other junk card whose value is roughly comparable to Copper. The more other trashing and/or draw you already have (including previous Cemetery purchases), the less inclined you are to trash your Coppers with Cemetery — i.e. if you have 8 cards in your deck, you'd much rather buy a Smithy than replace four Coppers with a Cemetery, because the Smithy helps your tempo but the Cemetery hurts it. On the other hand, if you have extra stop cards in your deck that you wouldn't normally have, that makes you more inclined to trash Coppers. As long as you have two or more Estates, trashing them is basically always better than buying any engine component for $4 unless you have a better way of trashing them coming up really soon, but if your engine is already working smoothly, adding more payload or greening in order to pressure your opponent or to answer your opponent's pressure can situationally be better.
+
Trashing your Haunted Mirror is usually a good plan, as it is identical to a Copper for most purposes. Gaining a Ghost in doing so is often a nice bonus as Ghost is a sifter and Throne Room variant that can ensure a good start to a big turn, but it’s not always worth the opportunity costs of waiting for a suitable chance to trash your Haunted Mirror and also declining to play an Action card so that you can discard it. However, the prospect of obtaining a Ghost as compensation for terminal collision might slightly alter your calculation when considering two terminals in the opening (e.g. double Amulet). As with other Kingdoms that offer Ghost, the value of gaining one may be higher than usual if it is the only village, and lower than usual if you will risk hitting inconvenient targets, such as mandatory trashers (e.g. Remodel).

+

+
Although Cemetery has a couple of other properties, such as being worth 2VP and coming with a Heirloom, Haunted Mirror, these are not too often a consideration when Cemetery is on the board. Haunted Mirror is a fairly weak Heirloom, since it only gains one Ghost and it's fairly difficult to achieve, and Cemetery is weaker than Duchy as a VP card. It should primarily be thought of as a trasher, and if you happen to have a use for the other effects, then that's a nice bonus. Late-game, keep in mind how many Cemeteries each player has when counting points and determining whether or not you should pile out.

 • When you gain a Cemetery, trash from zero to four cards from your hand.

[edit] Strategy

Cemetery is an on-gain trasher and a supplementary source of alt-VP. Its most powerful use case occurs when you can gain it early in the game while still having a hand full of multiple junk cards to trash. Its presence also guarantees that you have at least one way to trash its Heirloom, Haunted MirrorHaunted Mirror.jpg, in order to gain a GhostGhost.jpg, although the value of going out of your way to achieve this is variable.

Several trashers are easier and faster to use than Cemetery in most cases (e.g. ChapelChapel.jpg), so Cemetery tends to be of minor importance if such a card is available. This means that, in order to use Cemetery effectively, you need to gain it while still having a large number of targets in hand. One way to achieve this is with strong draw, although this may be difficult early in the game when trashing is a top priority, since CoppersCopper.jpg are still your main source of payload; ways to spike either hand size (e.g. GearGear.jpg) or $ (e.g. Bounty HunterBounty Hunter.jpg) may be helpful. An often preferable alternative is to avoid the need for an increased hand size by using a gainer to obtain the Cemetery; Workshop variants tend to be best for this, as they can be acquired in the opening. Gainers that can gain cards to hand such as CobblerCobbler.jpg and SculptorSculptor.jpg can be particularly useful as you can also trash the Cemetery alongside your starting junk. Finally, AlmsAlms.jpg synergizes well with Cemetery, as it allows you to gain the card with nothing in play at all, thereby providing a ChapelChapel.jpg-like effect as early in the game as you want it, including in the opening.

A Cemetery gained early in the game is often a useful trash-for-benefit target later: for example, UpgradeUpgrade.jpg or TransmogrifyTransmogrify.jpg can turn it into a strong Action card costing $5. Later on, it can offer a reasonable source of alt-VP as an intermediate option between EstateEstate.jpg and DuchyDuchy.jpg—in the endgame, it is therefore once again a good target for WorkshopWorkshop.jpg variants, especially if you’ve picked up additional junk to trash, e.g. CursesCurse.jpg.

Cemetery trashes cards when you gain it, that's pretty sweet. I will just tell you now, it is great to gain it with a WorkshopWorkshop.jpg or something. It means everyone has a Haunted MirrorHaunted Mirror.jpg, which gives you a little sub-game to play to get a GhostGhost.jpg.

[edit] Secret History

HinterlandsHinterlands.jpg tried and failed to get a when-gain trasher. GuildsGuilds.jpg managed it via having the card's ability also be trashing. Cemetery manages it by not doing anything else, it's just VP. I was pretty thrilled with this when I thought of it, and then it played great, hooray.
