[edit] Strategy
Ferry is a strong Event whose targeted cost reduction can often speed up your building. Its two primary use cases are to obtain an expensive card immediately in the opening and to make it easier to amass many copies of a particular target, both of which can be powerful effects. Fairly often, both of these cases apply to the same target—i.e., one that is expensive, a high priority to gain, and potent in multiples (e.g. Cultist).
With a / or / opening split, Ferry allows you to buy an Action card costing or occasionally on turn 2. This can be critical if gaining such a card as soon as possible is a high priority, which is often the case with a thinner such as Recruiter, and it’s likely to be worth Ferrying it even if you anticipate needing only one or two copies.
Later in the game, having your token on a card that you plan to gain several copies of is typically the most efficient way to use it. Doing so not only makes it far more likely that you will be able to afford it, but also makes it more accessible via gainers (particularly Workshop variants), as effects that can gain or lower cards are much more common than those that can gain cards. Often, an important but otherwise expensive engine component (such as Hunting Lodge) is a good target. Another notable target is Stonemason, since Ferrying this effectively allows you to buy twice as many copies of an Action via its overpay effect.
Moving your cost reduction token more than once can have a high opportunity cost, but doing so sparingly and at an opportune moment can be a strong move. Doing so is particularly likely to become a relevant consideration late in the game, both because the pile you initially targeted may have run out and because you’re more likely to have enough and Buys available to make immediate use of the new effect. In the most important case, Ferrying a new target may allow you to stretch your to an immediate pileout.
Ferry has a complex relationship with cards that care about relative prices. Some, such as Band of Misfits or Border Village, make for poor Ferry token recipients as reducing their cost will severely limit which cards they can target. In other cases, however, Ferry can allow them to interact with cards that would otherwise be too costly. For example, by reducing the cost of Capital City down to , you can gain it with Haggler when you buy a Council Room.
